Lou frowned as he kept an eye on the news reports about the weather, not liking what he was hearing about the incoming storm at all and wishing he’d hear from Julian saying he was on his way home or something. The whole area was getting ready for what was coming and he knew his boyfriend would be busy helping the mayor, his uncle, getting ready for it as well since they had to worry about the whole area. Glancing at his phone on the coffee table he saw no calls or anything and sighed running a hand through his hair. He’d texted Ruth to make sure she was okay too asking if she wanted him to come pick her up so she could stay with him and Julian right now where she’d be safe and with people she could trust.
Not having heard from either of them he glanced around the living room before frowning as he heard a sound from upstairs. Pushing to his feet he headed toward the sound finding an open window and pushing it shut picking up the little table it had knocked over. Doing a quick run through of all the rooms being doubly sure they were all closed as the wind kicked up outside he frowned halfway downstairs when he realized he’d left his phone. ”Shit.” he mumbled hurrying down the rest and grabbing his phone seeing the missed call and listening to the voicemail as he checked the tv again for news.
Hearing the message and Julian talk about the roof collapsing he flipped channels fast trying to find something about it before just turning the TV off figuring with something like that they would need extra hands helping to make sure people were okay and if not then let them send him away but he wanted to try to help somehow not just sit home doing nothing and stressing. At least if he was helping he’d be kept busy and maybe see for his own eyes at some point of Julian was really really okay. Pulling on one of his hoodies he grabbed his keys making sure to lock the house up and looking at everything from the outside just to make sure he hadn’t missed anything before climbing into his jeep and heading toward city hall.
Was it stupid to be out driving in this? Yeah…but his jeep was one of those vehicles meant to go through water and keep rolling so it wouldn’t matter really unless it got too the point where it would just swallow his vehicle and right now it was not. Parking his vehicle he climbed out heading toward where he could see police and people from the fire department working and moving around picking one at random. ”Hey…I’m here to help if you need an extra pair of hands with anything or just need someone running things here or there…whatever...anything you need me to do.” he said really hoping he could help not just be sent home.

Trace had been there with Savannah when she'd gotten the call from her cousin. As it had stood, he'd been preparing to go out and give a hand wherever he could. Such was the life when you were a part of emergency services in a time of desperate need. And this was definitely one of those times of desperate need. Only a moment after Savvy had handed over the phone to him and he'd listened to the message, he'd hung up and been on the phone with his own supervisor, informing him, rather than asking him, that he was going to be setting up a rescue effort for those trapped in the City Hall. Apparently he'd been the first one with the news delivered to them as it was.
By the time Trace's pick up truck made it on scene, he could see the firetruck down the street hurriedly making its way towards the building. It looked bad. It looked really bad and he knew it. He'd promised he'd keep Savannah in the loop as to how he was doing as often as he could, but this was one of those situations that he had to take a minute to wrap his head around. But the moment the truck pulled up beside him, he got down to the heart of it. A lot of the firefighters themselves were still shaken up with the overwhelming destruction the hurricane was already wrecking on Myrtle Beach. Trace pointed towards the East side of the building. "See if there's some way to safely clear that tree away from the front. Get as many guys as you can out there if you have to. That building isn't safe for those people to be inside at the moment." He instructed, seeing as no one else seemed to be stepping up to plate.
And then Trace heard a familiar voice... ”Hey…I’m here to help if you need an extra pair of hands with anything or just need someone running things here or there…whatever...anything you need me to do.” He'd heard conversation on phones, but he was more than willing to put a name to the face at the moment. "Lou?" He asked, arching a brow. Either the guy had a lot of guts being out here, or Julian had told him about the incident and had panicked him. "Jesus, what are you doing out here man? Julian will crucify me if he finds out I let you out here but..." He shook his head and looked at the guys they had gathered around. "We need the hands." He admitted. He nodded his head in the direction that the roof had collapsed in. "Come with me around the other side of the building. We'll see if we can't clear enough away to get in through that side. We need to get people out of there and evacuated to the convention center ASAP."

Lou knew that his being out in the storm at city hall trying to help people clear away the damage done wouldn’t be what Julian meant when he’d said “be safe” but he was helping others get to safety like Julian and the Mayor and any officials or staff in the building so it counted because he was doing something to get others to be safe. He was one of those people who just wasn’t good at being useless when someone needed help. He was just one of those people who enjoyed being helpful when he could. Going to city hall and being useful was the right thing to do in this situation since at the very least he could fetch anything someone needed or be a set of wheels for anyone who needed it with a vehicle that could handle a bit of water and keep going. He was even more glad for buying his jeep now that it could be useful for more than just getting him to work or wherever he was feeling like going.
Approaching the scene at city hall he felt even a bit more worried since it looked more serious than he’d even imagined after the voicemail he’d gotten. Seeing people moving around and working already to get stuff done he was glad for that and hoped that no one had been hurt in what happened. When he approached the guy he didn’t know who it was but when his name came back at him he nodded and frowned a moment before adding things up in his mind and finding a name of his own. ”Trace right?” he asked and shook his head a little at the man’s words. ”No he won’t…I won’t let him since you’re not letting me do anything. I came on my own from my own decision to help out since you guys have got to be busy with everything going on.” he said and nodded when he said they needed the hands. ”Figured as much.” he said looking at the building where he indicated and listening before nodding. ”Alright I’ll do whatever I can…and my jeep is equipped for handling the water and things like the guy used to use it for off-road driving so I can offer it up as a vehicle to get anyone anywhere if the water’s high somewhere. Feet might get wet in it but the engine will keep going.” he explained following him glad he wasn’t being sent away since he really did want to help.

Trace nodded at Lou and what he said. "Good. That's good." He commented in reference to the truck as he made his way along the back of the building. "I have a pick up truck that's been lifted a bit, but it might take a few trips getting people back and forth from here to the Convention center. As soon as we can get people out of here, we're going to start bringing them back so I need you to be on the ready for that." He instructed as he took a look at the debris from the roof that had collapsed in front of the door. Honestly, it didn't look too bad. The chances of them hand bombing some of the debris out of the way so that, at the very least, they could get the door open enough for people to slip through looked to be a lot more promising than that massive tree back there.
"Okay..." He said as he pulled a pair of work gloves out of the cargo pocket on his pants. "I'm going to start moving some of this. There's a pair of work gloves in the back seat of my truck." He pointed to a huge Dodge pick up only a few feet away. "Go grab them, put them on and help me out here. We're going to try and clear enough away to get people out of here. Once I'm inside, I want you to grab your truck and pull it around the door and be ready for whoever comes through." He said. He really hoped he could rely on this guy to stay cool under the pressure of the moment. "And Lou, I need you to stay focused. I know you're worried about Jules, but you have to trust him enough to know that he's okay in the moment. All right." Trace gave him a slap on the back. "Let's do this."

Lou nodded when he said that was good glad someone else could see the benefit in his jeep since he was finding that to be really handy in his mind. Letting it go for now though until needed was smart and that’s what he did as he followed around the back of the building nodding as he listened to Trace talk about having a truck that was lifted as well. They had the means to get the people safely to the convention center but first they had to get the people out of the building. ”Ready for anything.” he said in answer when told he would need to be on the ready for helping get people to the convention center. He was good behind a wheel and calm thanks to being nearly constantly hyperactive so when the adrenaline got pumping for real it was still just normal for him in some ways. His dad had said before he should be a firefighter or something with the way he was but he’d never been into that idea so much as his art though he could be handy when needed it seemed.
Looking at the debris blocking the door he didn’t think it looked impossible to clear away to give an exit to the building and that was a good thing because their other obstacle would be a tree which did seem impossible at the moment. Looking over at the truck when it was pointed out he nodded but didn’t move just yet because trace was talking again. Listening he nodded glad he had gotten there when he did so his jeep wasn’t too far away blocked out by the vehicles of those there helping deal with all of this which would mean taking too much time to go get it. ”It’s close so soon as we need it I can go get it and I can fit five plus me safely.” he said and went to move off and get the gloves so he could help with clearing the debris away but paused when he spoke again. ”I love Julian and yeah I’m worried about him but he’s a grown man who can take care of himself. Right now I’m here to help whoever is in there that needs help. I’ll fuss over Julian once everyone’s safe.” he said seriously being honest. Yes he loved his boyfriend and wanted to make sure he was okay but that wasn’t his #1 reason for being here though it was a close second. Nodding he moved off to the truck getting the mentioned gloves and pulling them on before heading back to help clear away debris.

Suddenly, Trace was pretty damned glad that Lou had come out this way. Though he didn't think Julian was going to be too pleased with the fact that his future cousin-in-law was out in the storm along with his boyfriend, he knew damned well that it took a special kind of a person who, as a civilian, would risk their lives out in this storm just to see to it that other people were safe in the moment. The guy seemed to have a decent head on his shoulders and was willing to do what was needed to get the job done. Trace took a moment to look around as Lou sprinted off to get the gloves. There were a couple of 2x4s mixed in with the rest of the rubble that could be used to support some of the more unstable pieces of the roof if it came down to it. Trace pulled them away from the top of the pile and set them aside for the time being, just in case.
He stared moving the brick work that had crumbled away from the top of the building, chucking it over his shoulder before grabbing another piece. Before he knew it, Lou was right along side with him helping out and, over time, there were a few other fire fighters and police officers that had come along to help out in the efforts. If they didn't get the lot of them out of there, there was a damned good chance that the whole unstable building would come down around them at this point. "Remind me to buy you a drink after this." He called back at Lou as he kept on working.
Soon enough, there was a little space to get the door open, but it wasn't enough. Trace pointed to one of the 2x4s that was on the ground. "Pass me one of those. We're going to wedge it under this corner of the roof and make sure that none of it caves in as we try and move the rest of that back there." He pointed to more debris a little further in that was blocking the back side of the door. They needed to get to those people, but they needed to think about their own safety in the moment as well.

Lou didn’t do what he did to get any attention for helping out in a serious situation or anything like that, he’d made the choice to come out and help because he knew not many would do this. They didn’t have to because they had families to worry about, and they needed to think of themselves and that was okay but he was one of those people who’d been raised to help however he could because it was the right thing to do. Being out in this storm wasn’t what he was thinking about, the people who were stuck in the building until someone could get them out and somewhere safer were who held his thoughts right now. Looking at the debris as he helped clear it away he made a mental note of what was available in the mix of things that could possibly be used later like the 2x4’s and the bricks that could be stacked to prop things on if they had nothing else. They could make sure the area was sturdy enough for the evacuation hopefully and he’d let those who had a better idea what needed done make those calls. There to do as told and help get things done he kept working at the task given to him.
Julian probably wouldn’t be happy when he found out that Lou had left the safety of home to come out in the storm and work in already dangerous before he even got there conditions. Lou’s natural habit of getting hurt sitting still being something to worry about normally but he was normally a lot steadier when focused on a task instead of his normal scatter-brained self doing whatever came to mind. Looking over as he heard Trace he chuckled and nodded, ”Will do.” he called back as he kept working carefully alongside everyone who’d come to help with clearing away the debris.
Looking at the space he knew he nodded and grabbed the 2x4 handing it off to trace thinking about how this was going to be risky even if they managed to get this corner wedged since the wind could easily screw things up more given the chance. ”I could probably fit through that door if you needed me to check things on the other side or anything.” he offered not sure they’d ever send someone untrained in but putting it out there just in case.

Trace started wedging the 2x4 in place and got to work securing it for the time being when Lou spoke up. He looked back at him and frowned a moment before looking back at the door. He didn't see he had much choice at the moment, what with how close the storm was getting. He sighed. "We'll get you in there. You need to get people organized and to the door. My chest won't fit past the door at the moment and I think you're probably our safest bet for getting in there without disturbing things too much. Work fast, get them organized." He said as he wedged the wood in a little further with another firefighter who was helping out.
He looked at Lou then and handed him off a two way radio. "You get in there, find out where everyone is and get them to this end of the building but keep them far enough back so that if something out here happens, none of them are going to get injured." He said. "When you get in there, give us a good read on how badly people are injured in there so we know what to have on stand by." He paused a moment as he pulled the door open for Lou. "And when you get in there, keep your own safety in mind first and foremost right now. You're not going to do those people any good if we lose you doing something stupid. Got me?"

Lou kept clearing some of the stuff away that hadn’t yet been moved as they were wedging the 2x4 into place. Looking over as Trace began speaking he was both surprised and not about being sent in and was glad he’d offered because he could help. Listening to him and nodding he tucked a hand into his pocket wrapping his fingers around his keys watching as they wedged the wood in more securely. ”I’ll let them know you’re working on getting this door open farther but to be careful as they wait just in case.” he said knowing the roof being secure was an issue and made a quick plan about what he’d do once past the door. He would make sure there wasn’t too much debris on the other side anywhere and if it looked secure he’d start finding people and getting them over toward the door so they could get to safety once the door was opened far enough.
Taking the radio he listened again to everything Trace was telling him since Trace was the one in charge of this at the moment it seemed and he wanted to do the right thing not screw up and get anyone hurt. ”I’ll find someone in there and explain the situation so they can keep people by the door organized and not at risk then I’ll find someone else who knows where people might or will be so they can help me find everyone and get them over here. Promise I’ll be extra careful with myself and with everyone inside.” he said and pulled his keys from his pocket holding them out to one of the guys standing by them. ”Blue jeep over there, it’s good for handling water so don’t worry about that.” he said so they could use it to get people to safety as they came out since he didn’t think he had to worry right now about anyone stealing his jeep during a rescue.
Moving toward the door he gave Trace a quick grin. ”Never thought being a crazy and thin little shit would help.” he said before carefully slipping through the door looking around to be sure he wasn’t disturbing anything as he went. Checking the area real fast he saw some damage but everything seemed sturdy on this side for now. ”Looks good on this side. Moving to find people now.” he said starting down the hall finding a group of people gathered in a room not far down and explaining to them what was going on. One of the men stepped up offering to keep things at the door organized while he and a woman who knew the building inside and out would go find more people and check for any injured people. Hitting the button on the radio he gave a quick update. ”A Jeff Thompson is going to be the one at the door making sure people don’t do anything stupid on this side, few cuts and scrapes but nothing serious on this group. Moving further in to find more people.” he said before following the woman as they started looking for everyone else.

Trace had to handle it to the guy. He was level headed in situations like these and, given the way that Savannah had described him in the past, he could honestly say that he hadn't been expecting it in the least, but it was definitely a pleasant surprise now that he was seeing it all first hand. "Sounds good." He said when Lou outlined his little plan. "I'll make sure I get someone out here to take care of the injured if it comes down to it and make sure that we have someone standing by at the convention center to receive them all when they get there. He knew that Lou would be careful at the moment. He'd be given a task and he certainly seemed the type that would do his best to see it through.
He watched as Lou handed his keys off to the guy standing by and Trace kept on working away at what he was doing. Once he was through the door he listened for Lou's voice on the other side to know he was okay. "All right. Things on that side are now in your hands. Be careful in there, Lou." He repeated before he left Lou to it. He had a damned good feeling the the younger man would wind up pulling through well when all was said and done. Trace was soaked through to the bone at the moment, but it didn't matter. None of it mattered at the moment so long as it meant that everyone made it out of there safe and sound.
When he got the update from Lou, he relayed the information on to the appropriate sources. "10-4. Keep pressing in there and we'll make sure everything's ready for you when you make it back through over there. Well done, Lou. You're doing an amazing job. Let me know if there's anything we can do for you once you're out. Shouldn't be long before one of us can make it through to help some of these people out." He informed him. Now all that was left to do was to finish clearing all of this away...

Julian had the vast majority of people gathered in the supply room he'd told them all to go to, but there were still a few people wandering around the building that Julian had to get organized and safe. He'd checked the exit by the tree that was blocking the way and he could see that there were firefighters nearby trying to break through, but he doubted they'd have much luck there with the way the wind was blowing and the size of the tree at the moment. He doubted anything short of a crane was going to do the job. That being said, Julian made his way around to the other side of the building again.
When he was almost back around to the doors, he stopped dead in his tracks when he saw what was coming his way. "You have got to be kidding me." He said a moment before picking up his pace. "This is so not what I meant by 'be safe', Eoin Louis McLoughlin!" Julian said as he all but skidded to a stop in front of his boyfriend. But christ, was he ever glad to see him. He wasn't sure he wanted the answer in the moment, but he shook his head and asked the question anyways. "How... Where.... When..." He paused a moment. Not how he saw the question coming out... "How the hell did you manage to make it through here?" He finally managed to spit out in the moment.

Lou knew that people usually got the impression he was a crazy, mostly spastic, little fellow but he had his moments where he could be serious if need be. This was one of those situations where it was required and he managed it well he thought since he hadn’t been asked to step back away from all going on yet. He nodded as Trace said he’d make sure to have people on this side of the door ready to handle anything coming their way and at the center. He was focused on doing what he needed to do and the task at hand. He would make sure the people were safe, they would get everyone out of this building…and then he would go home and eat some of the pie he’d bought the other day because this kind of thing? It earned a man some pie.
Hearing back from Trace that things on this side of the door were in his hands he had a moment of “oh woah.” before he put a lid on it and got back to focus. Cold and wet from being out in the wind and rain he pushed his hood back and found the inside group speaking to them quickly but clearly to get all the information he needed and to fill them in on what was going on as well. Hearing back on the two way from Trace he nodded to himself and smiled, ”Got it. Glad I can help and I’ll keep moving. We’ll see about that but right now all I think I’m going to need when out of here is the pie sitting on the counter back home.” he said getting a little laugh from the woman showing him the way through the halls and laughing a little himself.
Moving through the building they checked the rooms for anyone but hadn’t really found much of anything so far until he saw a familiar form headed toward them. Seeing that Julian was okay with his own eyes was a huge relief to a part of him he’d not been thinking too much about and he smiled even as Julian came over saying the words he’d expected to hear. ”Hello to you too. I know it’s not what you meant but if I started doing as told or what was expected of me things would get boring.” he said And shook his head a little at Julian’s aborted questions motioning behind him at the one that made sense. ”Door? Listen I met up with Trace when I came over here to help and we cleared the debris in front of the door back there. They’re still clearing but we’ve sent the people we could find over there so that once they get it open far enough they can start getting people out and over to the center. Do you know where anyone is?” he said leaving out the part about volunteering to slip past the door that may have still been a bit dangerous when he was doing so since he could tell Julian about that later once they’d gotten everyone out of the building. ”Also do you know if anyone’s hurt? I’m keeping them updated so they know what to have out there for when we start getting people out or they can get someone in here to help so I need to know anything you know about the people in here.”

Lord. Julian loved the man in front of him but, sometimes, such as right now, he wanted to strangle him for giving him panic attacks. Not that Julian was really prone to them or anything of the sort, but it had a way of jolting your heart when the man you told only a short while ago to keep safe and hunker down somewhere was out in a tropical storm playing rescue hero. Maybe later he'd feel differently about his boyfriend's part in all of this but for now, he was just trying to get his heart out of his throat at the thought of all of the millions of things that could have otherwise happened to him while he'd been out there to begin with.
"If you started doing what you were told maybe I'd be able to tack a few more years onto my life because I'm pretty sure you just scared about twenty of them off of me with thinking about everything that could have happened to you." He raked a hand through his hair and took a deep breath before he finally relented a little bit. "But jesus christ, I'm so happy to see you here, alive and well, Lou." He admitted with a shake of his head. And how could he not be happy for that. He'd been a little worried with the fact that he hadn't heard back from Lou at all until then. Actually, he'd been very worried. "But next time, rather than making a visible appearance, you could have... Oh... I don't now... Called?"
But Julian listened to Lou for a moment and that pride him him forced its way right to the front again. How the hell could he be even remotely angry with him? He sighed. "I know where everyone else is." He admitted to his boyfriend. "Supply closet. It's the only interior room encased in brickwork that I could think of at the time. The mayor and all of the other people in the building are hunkered down over in there." He said as he turned on his heels and started making his way towards the supply room he'd been referring to. He pulled the door open once they were there to a group of about 12 people hunkered down in the room. "The building was mostly evacuated earlier, save for a group of people who refused to leave until the mayor was gone." He gave his uncle an exasperated look and he looked rather guilty in the moment. "So what do you say we start moving them all towards the other end of the building, get them out of here and we'll be home in time for Spongebob, huh?"

Lou knew that this was probably far far far from Julian’s idea of what he should be doing right now since he’d said safe and this could technically be considered very unsafe. He would talk to him about it later though and smooth it over somehow because right now he was helping and that’s what counted. He wasn’t anyone’s go-to guy for serious situations since most people only knew him as the pretty much crazy guy who tripped over air and was good for a laugh or a shoulder if you needed one. His hyperactive/crazy personality didn’t always make people think he could do well in serious situations but he could and he didn’t mind surprising people in his life with that fact when he could be helpful. He had just wanted to be able to help out with this, do some good and make sure people were safe, and by that he did mean Julian since he was there but also Julian’s uncle and the other people in the building as well.
Listening to Julian speak he frowned a little and sighed shaking his head, ”Julian I’m not trying to worry you or take years off your life, I just couldn’t stay home and do nothing. I had to at least try to help and at first I thought I’d just be like running around fetching things but the jeep handles water so flooded roads aren’t a problem and they needed an extra set of hands then I could fit through the door and I’m helping. It’s a good thing.” he said wanting to make Julian understand so he wouldn’t worry so much right now. They could think back and worry later if they needed too but right now they needed to stay focused for everyone else’s sake. Relationship drama could come later though he had to smile at what Julian said about being happy to see him there. ”Little wet but otherwise perfectly fine.” he said and blinked in surprise reaching up to slap his palm to his forehead. ”I meant to do that…seriously I did but then I was on my way here and just…sorry.” he said realizing he had forgotten the part of his “help people” plan that involved calling Julian and telling him that he was okay before showing up to help.
Looking at Julian and hearing he knew where everyone was he blinked then grinned glad to hear that. It helped that they didn’t have to search through the whole building if they knew who all had been in there and Julian was sure that they were all in one place except for the few he’d met up with in the hall by the door he’d come through. ”Alright well we need to get them and move them to the door so they can be evacuated. They’re taking everyone down to the center so they’re safe.” he said and gave Trace a quick update through the two way that he’d met up with Julian who knew where everyone was and that they were going to get them and bring them down to the door. The woman who’d been showing him around moved with them since it was safer to stick all together than have one person wandering alone and he looked at the people inside the supply closet as Julian opened the door giving them a little smile. Focusing as Julian spoke Lou nodded refocused. ”Alright if any of you are hurt let me know so I can make sure you can get treated once you’re out the door. We need to all stick together and when we get by the door wait to be told to go through because of the damage there I’m pretty sure they’re doing it one at a time to be sure none of the wedges holding stuff up gets bumped unless they got the door the whole way opened by now. Gotta move quick too.” he said speaking to those gathered there so they’d know what exactly was happening before looking at Julian again. ”Sorry to tell you I’m eating the last of the pie when we get home. But for now let’s get moving.” he said and gave Trace the heads up that they were on their way before leading back toward the door so they could all get out of there.

Julian looked at his boyfriend as he reasoned with him. He couldn't help the way he tugged his lower lip in between his teeth and sighed. He knew he was right and he knew that they needed all of the able bodied people that they could get helping them all through this, but it still didn't sit well with him that his boyfriend had been out there in the storm when he had told him to hunker down somewhere safe. Julian wouldn't have been able to hold himself up after all of this if something wound up happening to Lou. There wasn't a chance in hell that he'd be able to do it. Julian paused a moment, smoothing a hand over the breast pocket of his jacket to ensure himself that everything was right in place where it should have been. But that was when he realized he'd left the jacket behind in his uncle's office before the storm had all but destroyed it. Julian's heart sank for a moment, but he forced himself to focus on what was happening at the moment. He'd have to deal with it later.
Julian gave his boyfriend an unimpressed look when he smacked his forehead and said that he had meant to call. 'I'll let it slide this time but I swear... I'm going to be harassing you with calls and texts for months after all of this blows over." He muttered as he got right down to the heart of business. He needed to focus more on the people around him and less on the overwhelming sense of relief he felt in the moment. The item he had locked away in the breast pocket of his jacket that had been in his uncle's office could be replaced. The man in front of him definitely could not be replaced. Not by a long shot.
Julian had to say... for a man that was normally charged with running the show, it was nice to allow himself to decompress and hand the reigns off to someone else. And Lou was doing a fantastic job of keeping people mostly calm with the news that they were all going to get out of there. "All right." He nodded to Lou. "I'll take up the rear and make sure everyone gets out and follows. You lead them on to the door and I'll be right behind you." He said, giving his boyfriend a reassuring nod. They were all going to get out of there and Julian would buy Lou a thousand pies if he damned well wanted when all of this was said and done.
