age fourteen , father’s funera
would you like to say a few words? said a soft voice that contrasted to the harsh emotions that she was feeling but bailey managed to give a small nod to the male dressed in black before rising out of her seat. she skimmed past the closed casket, not ready to face the truth but as soon as she stepped onto the podium, she had to. people stared at her, giving her the apathetic looks and she returned the gazes with her own soft apologetic smile, wiping at her eyes, sorry…guess you can never really prepare yourself for this.. she gave a nervous chuckle as people began to shift in their seats and her eyes fell to the picture of the middle aged man, the frame was gold and surrounded by white flowers to symbolize a peaceful passing. I really should have declined that offer y’all, I have…no words to say with all due respect to the deceased..” which she casted a look at the closed casket, even now I don’t see him. I never really saw him, I loved him but he was more like a friend, than a father and I’m just being real here. which caused the audience to gasp. her father had been a beloved member of the community but everyone was aware of his addiction to the deadly drug and the feeling he got from it. divorce was ripped through the family of five, bailey being the oldest of the three siblings and depression and anxiety rippled through the young girl since the day that her father walked out the door. he went to war, he fought for everyone here..me, you, my family, the country and …he never really did fight for his family. he never really showed ..any interest in his kids. not just jaqueine, tyler and I but in any kid that he sired along the way home. he was a good solider, he was a brave man but the war, the thing that we support messed him up. he turned to drugs to run from the nightmares, he turned against his family in fear of hurting us both physically and mentally. and…well, I’m sad to say goodbye. I wish I had gotten to know him better but at fifteen, I’m grown up and really…the man did nothing in helping to raise me..” and then she stepped off the podium and glanced into the audience. the stares, glares and open mouthed expressions were surrounding her, and her mother’s was the worst. she knew a beating was going to come from a belt when they returned home but it was something that had been building up and it was something that she was able to release at the very last second. bailey usually held her emotions in, said that she was fine when she wasn’t and let the world pass her by with a fake optimism, but this time, she was not going to let this moment pass. the girl would never really speak harshly against her father after this but her outlook on life would be different because things would be changing.
CHAPTER II: YES OR NO?
age sixteen , talent contest
two years since her father’s death, attending church every Sunday and being the best Christian girl that she could be, bailey was fuming mad at his point and considering breaking one of the ten commandments. you did what!? she shouted at the cowering siblings who were now backing away from their sister with tear filled eyes and a physical shake becoming visible. the sight of her siblings being a little more than upset caused her to simmer down just a little but she could still not believe that they went behind her back and did that. how could you guys do that to me? she asked but raised an eyebrow and stepped back as her siblings handed her a letter that had already been opened and was half poking out. she could clearly see the word “star” written across the front of the letter and she looked back to her two siblings who were now smiling. you videotaped me and you opened my mail? you two better have a good explanation for this.. she said coldly, muttering a string of curses under her breath before opening the letter, unfolding the two sides and reading over the information. her eyes widened and the paper nearly fell out of her hand, you entered me in a contest!? a singing contest! guys!, dragging out the last word with a groan and then sighed. the look on jac’s and tyler’s face were just to show how sorry they were but how proud they were and bailey took a step forward, enveloping them into a hug. when is it? she asked, not able to deny that she was a little curious about it but she had never sang infront of an audience before and thought was already causing her lunch to rise up just a little. releasing her siblings, she heard the date and nodded, okay, well…guess I have to find sometime to practice.., glancing around the living room to see it looking like a mess once more. shit. she muttered before turning to look at her siblings who were giggling, don’t…don’t say that word, okay? um, go do your homework. don’t tell me you don’t have any cause you are both in middle school. she said with a raised eyebrow, I know all.. and then scampered away. bailey moved to the couch, shoving a pile of clothes out of the way and reading over the letter once more, what do you think dad, should i?
running up the steps two by two, she reached the door of her mother’s bedroom door and gave it a small knock. the room was pitch black, walls and curtains blending into the surroundings as she had requested that bailey paint the room black after bailey’s father passed away. claire.. she spoke, stepping into the room, her mother not wanting to be called “mom” anymore, and so had asked for her eldest to call her by her first name. moving to the side of the bed, she sat down by the lump of blankets and sighed, placing a hand on what she guessed was her mother’s shoulder, jac and tyler are little rascals you know…if you came out, you would see. but all she got in a reply was a small shift of the blanket and her mother turning her back to her. bailey found it both ironic and disturbing that her mother would do that, they entered me in a singing contest. I got a spot in the show…should I do it m..claire? she asked, catching herself on addressing the woman who used to be her mother. she got a shrug and a “go away” which caused her eyes to water before she blinked them away and stood up, okay. dinner will be ready in fifteen. i’ll bring it up to you.. she said, collecting the tray that was just lunch half eaten which resulted in a sigh. I can’t go to this thing.. she spoke while dropping the letter into the soup bowl and turning to walk down the steps. the rest of the night was spent with a blurred vision of cleaning, doing laundry, and trying to budget everything out but bailey was at a loss. she got to bed at almost five in the morning after finishing her own homework and checking over her siblings as well and then she proceeded to get up the next morning and attend class. even with everything that had happened or was happening, bailey was able to keep some friends regardless of her busy schedule and she was still a straight A student who just constantly looked exhausted.
CHAPTER III: CAN’T CATCH A BREAK
age seventeen and a half , college acceptance
thanks for shopping at piggly wiggly and have a nice day., flashing a smile to the regular while handing them a recipet and proceeding to check out the next person and then the next until her shift was over and she hung up her apron in the back. jacqueline came running into the locker room with tears in her eyes which caused bailey to quickly catch the crying teenager, hey hey..babe, what’s wrong? she asked with a raised eyebrow, reaching over to wipe her sister’s eyes, who was speaking in hysterics. jac’s voice was caught in her throat and she was gasping for air but that was when bailey noticed that their brother was not beside jac. baby, where’s ty.. which caused her sister to cry again and her coworker to come in. the town was small, everybody knew everyone but there was a group of teenagers from the neighboring town that liked to stir up some trouble when they got bored. judging by the scars on her sister’s arm and cheek, they had messed with jac and got tyler as a punishment but bailey was torn. she needed to stay with her sister, she needed to get home but she also had to make sure that tyler was okay. carol, watch her, please. and before a yes or no was given, bailey was running through the store while buttoning her blouse back up. she ignored the call of her manager as she managed to make it outside, her eyes scanning the parking lot for any sign of tyler. she noticed the red mustang that carried the hooligans from one town to another, HEY she shouted, rushing over to them. a rush of protectiveness came over and she grabbed onto one of the boy’s arm, where is he!? she shouted, ignoring the leers that she was getting. I swear to g-d hilton, you better tell me where he is before I shove my foot so far up your ass that you will be able to taste the rubber of my g-d damn soles!, and she was suddenly pushed forward. I don’t know nothing about anything which caused her to snort and shake her head, trying to forget the cruel irony in that statement and gave him a shove, tell me g-d dammnit! she screamed at him which caused her body to collide with the side of the car. her eyes widened as soon as she looked into the backseat and without a second thought, she whipped around to face him, he’s fifteen! have you lost your fucking mind you damned hick!, reaching for the keys in his hand but having them pulled away from her, give them! she shouted and got her words repeated back to her with a teasing tone. you lock my brother in your fucking car and you are going to mimick me!? want to see what happens when you pull this shit!?, she walked away, only to return moments later with a brick that she tossed against the driver’s side window before kicking her foot into his headlight. fuck you, get him out of there and get the fuck out of my town. because that was exactly what this place was. tyler was pulled from the car, crying and scared as he clung to his sister who was getting glares all around her. she knew the outcome of beating on the gang’s car was bad but she had a moment of temper and had lost all rational thought. go to the store room baby, jac is there, okay..i’ll be there., pressing a kiss to the top of his head and prying his arms off from around her middle.
the next ten mintues were a blur after her brother had raced off back into the store but she did recall cops breaking up whatever had happened. beaten and bloody, they had not taken a liking to the idea of their fun being ruined and the car was just a bonus. her lip had been split, bruises along her ribs and she had a nice shiner surrounding her eye. three boys against one girl was not a fair fight and the police were aware of that when they asked her to press charges and she agreed. the town was no longer safe though, things were about to get heated very quickly and with graduation looming in the near distance, bailey knew that she had to get her family out of there. her mother lost control of her depression but gained it back in minor dosages and in this one, claire actually took of her daughter until the swelling was gone and the redness faded. she wore her scars day in and day out until they faded and by the time the girl had been discharged from the hospital, everyone knew the story.
CHAPTER IV: NEW LEAF
age nineteen , college acceptance&moving day
the money that she had been saving up for college was decreasing a little bit each money as she was forced to dip into the account in order to provide food and necessities for her family. once again, her mother had fallen into a depression after bailey had made the executive decision to head up north to a new place. she could not bear the thought of going to school without her siblings being there and she was not going to deny that her own mother was a huge concern for her. the thought of leaving the three of them would cause her body to shake and her breathing to accelerate and tyler had agreed regardless of just starting his junior year and jacqueline was eager to get out of the small town and into somewhere where people were actually living without the need of welfare. bailey did not have the heart to tell her that they were one of those families and would probably continue to be but she had done research and found a cheap place with enough room for everyone. no dorm room for her as she had to make sure that her mother and siblings were taken care of as she had for the past 5 years or so.
the day that they had moved was a good day, it was scary but the drive up to myrtle beach was decent. she had been accepted to the university and she took her family along with her. she had secured a job, a house, and some provisions for the first few weeks that they would be there. she began her classes in a week and had nothing prepared for it, and though she knew that working and a high school was hard, university was going to be worst. her mother had found her bedroom pretty fast and the same cycle had started once more where she would eat half of her food and then proceed to vomit or sleep the small amount off. jacqueline and tyler explored a lot, going to the beach more than anything and bailey began to think that everything was going to settle down for once.
CHAPTER V: WHOLE NEW CAN OF WORMS
age twenty , present day
her head was aching as she proceeded to open her eyes, a dull pain piercing her eyeballs and causing her to snuggle closer into the chest that she was laying against. wait, what? her eyes shot open and then she winced because of the pain, her head slowly picking up and looking down at the attractive sleeping male. she put a hand to her forehead, trying to remember the events of the evening before but was coming up with a huge blank. she remembered drinking, being invited out by to her first college party and though she was hesitant, her brother and sister insisted that she went and they would watch their mother. scrambling out of the bed, she reached for her purse that had been dropped to the floor and she pulled out her phone, reading through the frantic messages from her siblings. how do I explain this.. she spoke softly, sitting on the floor with nothing but a sheet wrapped around her. typing her message slowly, giving it a bit of thought, she pressed send and then fall onto her back against the floor. you know the bed is comfier said a voice which caused her to yelp and quickly sit up, looking to the groggy male, ..uh, yea, I noticed. I really like the..pillows. she said nervously, scrambling to her feet and grabbing at the clothes that were both hers and his on the floor. you want to wear my jeans?, a yawn following his words and bailey looked down at the amount of clothes in her hand that probably doubled what she had been wearing yesterday, shaking her head, she quickly dropped the extra clothing and rushed into the bathroom. she felt sick, naseauated and tired but she had to finish the essay and get home, uh…so where am I exactly? she asked, stepping out of the bathroom in the clothes that she had been wearing the night before. my dorm? replied the male, giving a smirk in her direction as he rose off the bed and slipped on his boxers, in which she looked away, and that is….at usc? she asked with a hopeful voice, you don’t remember anything do you? he asked with a chuckle, stepping around to go into the bathroom. I wish I did.. she mumbled as he passed by, moving to sit on the edge of the bed and hold her head. she was handed two tylenol and a glass of water, obviously, this was my first party…and this was not planned in the slightest but um, I’m baile.., he chuckled, bailey hart. I know, you told me about fifteen times last night. which caused a blush to rise to her cheeks. this isn’t my first night stand y’know… and now she realized how slutty that sounded and shook her head, I mean, …I don’t know what I mean. I’m just going to go. he gave a wave in her direction and a smirk to follow, see you around bailey julia hart and she groaned to the use of her full name.
eight and a half weeks later
seated in her political science class, her pen poised and trying to ignore the sudden feeling to throw up. she figured it was because she had only downed a glass of apple juice and a banana, she was just hungry. the feeling became more urgent as she felt her stomach lurch and her eyes widen, covering her mouth and running out of the class. her teacher gave some kind of comment because a string of chuckles were heard as the door was shutting and she rushed to the bathroom, emptying the content of her stomach and looking down at her shaking hands. she was pleased that she had made it to the bathroom but what she did not expect were the blue walls and stepping out of the stall, she noticed the urinals against the wall. bailey hart. i know for a fact that you don’t have a penis.. but she raised her hand up and turned her head to feel her stomach lurch once more, you sick? he asked which she shrugged at the question. even if she wasn’t, she would still go to work, she would still attend classes, let me drive you home, or at least come to my dorm, you know where it is… and she groaned, having known the voice was familiar. I’m fine really.., moving to the sink and taking a handful of water and rinsing her mouth of both any residue and taste, one night stands aren’t supposed to care. she muttered while grabbing her bag and walking out of the bathroom with some dignity in tact.
