[/b] he grumbled, swatting his friend again who again was trying to convince him to get up and start the bet but Emmett wanted to take his time, he wanted to study her which could be labelled as being insane but he did not want to lose this bet and even more so that he did not want to miss out on the chance to finally tell david off—just once. ”say it one more time and I’m going to put my fist into your face.”[/b] he grumbled, taking a bite of the mystery meat which was living up to it’s name as he spit it back onto his plate and pushed the tray away. he was sure to be bringing his lunch until the mystery meat days were over. come on em, you know you can just go up and talk to her. you got the status and the look, because everyone knew about this bet that was laid down because of the high stakes that came with it. it was not hard to see that everyone at the popular table was eager to see if the star gambler and notorious player could pull it off. that was his problem though, this girl would know his reputation, she would be aware of everything that he was and it was going to be hard to gain her trust and get her approval in anything that was him. he was popular, arrogant with some anger issues and an even bigger gambling problem and though the popular clique knew about the bet, no one else did, which would mean he was safe for the time being as he stood up. eyes fell onto him, his movements smooth and quick as he noticed her friend’s departing from the table and thought that this might be the perfect moment, the one opening that he was looking for. stepping into the line, he looked over to ryleigh for a moment, giving her a look over to be sure that she was as good looking as he remembered--and she was. the girl was unable to see how beautiful she was due to a disability but it was obvious that he was not the only one to notice. waiting for her he strolled over with an air of arrogance about him that was something more along the lines of a warning about his very personality and status, bt she wasn't able to see it.. his hair was flipped back with his free hand, running a hand through it and giving it the half bed head look that would make girls swoon most of the time, but it was obvious that appearances really did not matter here..she was new to the school, the perfect opening to get his claws into her at a fast enough rate and hoped to have this bet finished by the end of the week. she had an aire of innocene about her though that seemed untouchable but emmett figured that he would break through those walls with charm and wit. emmett thought that this bet was going to be easier than his history homework that he paid someone to do—because he had that kind of money or that kind of time. paying someone was easy but that was not where the thrill was, this was. he could feel his palms getting sweaty and his heart beating just a little faster against his ribcage as he tried to focus his attention on the red head now seated by herself and not the other girls that surrounded her. ryleigh, though beautiful, had the potential to be a grade A good looking girl but she never seemed to put much effort into it and that was where he thought he get her—an insecurity spot. it seemed like the most plausible opening at this point as he seated himself across from her, sliding the cookie across and clearing his throat to grab her attention, his hand reaching over and patting her hand and alerting her that he was seated across. the award winning smirk was unseen but it was still there, , ”hey”[/b] he started, sliding the cookie just a little closer, letting it brush against her hand, ”noticed you were by yourself, and no one this pretty should be without company..”[/b]. the noise of the cafeteria was almost soothing to ryleigh. it was funny how losing one sense made you, or at least made her, latch on to another like a lifesaver. with her sight gone, she relied heavily on her hearing. her hearing let her know who was around her, how close they were, it guided her when she was walking alone by the tapping from the cane that she had once despised and then learned to cling to. in old tales you would hear of how the lack of one sense enhanced others, and in her case ryleigh really believed that to be true. she could make out conversations four tables away in the din of the crowded cafeteria, conversations that she wouldn't have even attempted to listen to when she'd had her sight. when you were too focused on the appearance of the world around you there was just an extra layer of distractions to split your mind and pull attention away from your hearing, but that layer had disappeared, giving ryleigh a newfound appreciation to the wonder that was hearing.
that should be interpreted in no way as being that she didn't miss her sight. there wasn't a day that she didn't miss it, didn't curse the day that she had gotten in that accident, didn't wonder the famous 'why me?' phrase that everyone in a bad situation had to say. the redhead didn't think that she would ever get used to waking up in the morning and opening her eyes to the same darkness that had haunted her in her sleep or that she would ever stop wondering what her new friends looked like, something that she had to accept she would never learn through anything but their words describing themselves.
she was happier in myrtle beach than she had been in her hometown. at least, happier as a blind girl in myrtle beach than she had been in her hometown. she missed her friends from back home, from when they had been her friends. she missed the memories, but she still had them, and she knew that in her old setting they would never be repeated. too much had changed with her accident. it was a sad fact, but it was reality. the kids that she had grown up with, laughed with, called her peers had changed more than she did with her blindness. but here the people only knew her as the blind girl, as demeaning a title that might be. they couldn't judge her 'before and after'. they couldn't be friendly with her, and then grow distant because of her blindness. they had to either reject or accept her as she was, and thankfully there were at least a few people in the school who found acceptance to be the preferable way to go. while they might not be 'bffs' yet, they were at least friends and ryleigh was thankful that she could sit with them at lunch and laugh and joke around without feeling like an outcast.
with that being said, there were some things that she couldn't jump to tag along with them when they wanted to do it. the three girls she was sitting with today had a math test coming in the next period, a class that ryleigh was not involved in due to her disadvantage (she hated calling it a disability). while they made it clear that she was welcome to come along with them to the library and sit at the table, ryleigh didn't want to disturb their study session by talking, and it would be awkward sitting their in silence, so she opted to stay in the lunch room with her own thoughts, listening to the chairs as they moved with her friends' departure.
ryleigh tuned into a conversation nearby for a few moments, listening to some girls giggling about a party they were going to attend on the fast-approaching weekend, when a slight scrape of chair legs against a floor as it was adjusted brought her attention to her near surroundings again, head turning in the direction that she believed the noise had come from, but her eyes remained as vacant and unseeing as they would always be. the touch on her hands made her eyes narrow, but that was a minimal reaction compared to the way her heart jumped with surprise within her chest. she didn't think touch would ever be unsurprising without the warning of sight. ”hey” the voice didn't lesson the tension in her body, and were it possible she would be glaring in its direction. ”noticed you were by yourself, and no one this pretty should be without company..”. something else touched her hand, but she ignored it. she knew the voice, one of the louder ones in the school, and she had heard much of its owner from her friends. she didn't move her hand, but made no attempt to touch and further inspect what had last moved against it. "emmett, right?" she questioned in a cool tone (she doubted many could blame her of being wary at the moment). "to what do i really owe the honor of your company?"
