Hello I’m Lindsay Sanders here with “New Living” and today we are touring the home of local woman Maxine Kahle, a twenty year old university student whom is majoring in journalism with a minor in photography. She comes from a family that is known for their presence in the media both reporting it and being the victims of it with their political positions of her father, William Kahle, being in the Senate and her and her mother, Lauren Kahle, a member of the House of Representatives. She has two older brothers; her oldest brother is William Kahle the second and has made his own splash into politics as well while her second oldest brother, Jonathan Kale, is a decorated soldier who fought in the Iraq war. This young woman comes from a line of power and claims her decision to go into Journalism was to inspire “Respectable Reporting” by bringing the truth to light instead of guesses and rumors. People are curious to see what she will come up with in her future endeavors down this path with her “connections” to the stories people are looking to hear about.
Her parents have mentioned her choice to become independent in not asking for their help in affording a “grand” home or expecting them to pay for her. “Maxine’s always been a very independent girl, we weren’t really surprised when she said she was stepping out to stand on her own two feet and didn’t want our help because she needed to learn on her own. She worked and used the money saved and earned to get where she is and the only thing we’ve been allowed to help with is college costs.” Her mother once said when asked about Maxine’s choice in moving away from Washington and beginning her own life. It was said with a smile on her face clearly proud of her daughter’s choice to be a strong independent woman like her mother.
Maxine’s kindly allowed us a tour of her home so we can get to know her better and see how she manages to live what she calls a simple life while being in the spotlight thanks to her family.
The House
Approaching the house it is a very lovely looking place settled here in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Two stories with a covered wrap-around porch that seems to be going around the whole house. There is a fence but it seems the woman won the argument against too much security here which is rumored to be something she’s fought against since old enough to stand her ground on such matters. Looking at the home you’d think anyone could live here and that the person or family could be normal. Knocking we wait to see what the inside looks like because the outside is already impressive.
Maxine: Maxine opens the door and smiles at the reporter and camera, “Hello, welcome to my home. Please come in.” she greets stepping side to let them in.
Lindsay: “Hello to you as well and thank you very much for allowing us into your home today.” Lindsay says back stepping in and glancing around the main entry-way of the home.
Maxine: “Your welcome, it’s honestly no problem at all. I’m happy to show anyone curious enough because I love this place.” She says with a smile and glances around the front hall giving a little laugh “So do you want me to describe or just walk you through?” the young woman asks with a slightly unsure lilt to her voice.
Lindsay: “If you’d explain things that would be nice? We are here to get a glimpse into your home and life here so anything you want to mention we’re interested to hear.” Lindsay answers and smiles as the girl relaxes and doesn’t seem to tense or slip into the public figure she is normally seen as but stays just your average girl.
Maxine: “Well this is the front hall, nothing too special about it really just your average space? The doors here lead as you can see to your right into my living room then to your left into the kitchen and dining room. The door at the back of this hall opposite the front door is the back door which leads to the part of the porch that wraps around the house back there and to the back yard which I’ll show you later? Um…Oh the other two doors back there on the right side the first door leads to the downstairs bathroom and the second one leads to a utility room kind of thing where I keep…well actually I’m not sure what’s in there right now.” she begins explaining and laughs at not knowing what’s in a space in her own home lightly. She steps toward the living room and into the doorway staying back so they can have a look.
Lindsay: Listening as Maxine explains the downstairs layout Lindsay glances at the doorways mentioned and laughs along at the girls lack of knowledge on what’s in the utility room. Stepping toward the living room she goes inside with the camera in tow. “Very nicely done, did you decorate yourself?” she asks curiously looking around the room that’s decorated in rich shades of brown, green, and crème. It has a rustic feel to it with the fireplace and a large flat-screen television mounted to one wall. A large comfortable looking couch takes up the wall opposite the TV while a love seat and rocking chair are placed carefully allowing for plenty of seating. There are a few tables in the room at ends of couches and by the rocker but one larger one in the center of the space that has magazines and a coffee mug on it. The room is comfortable and has a “lived in” feel with pillows on the couches that look comfortable and a bookcase along another wall that is littered with not just books but pictures and little figurines that must mean something to the woman who lives there.
Maxine: “Yes I did actually, well me and my mom did together but I had final say in what did or didn’t get done in here. When I got the house the walls in here were painted a bright yellow and to be honest it was the shade of like a crayon? You know the bright neon seeming kind of yellow so I painted over it with an off-white since yellow is probably my least favorite color for decorating a house. Then as a “house warming present” my parents insisted on buying me the furniture for the house even though I tried to get them to agree to only doing one room. Me and my brother’s come by our stubborn personalities naturally since both of my parents have the ability to pretend they don’t hear when you argue against something they’ve set their minds too? At least with us kids that’s how they can be. They listen if it’s like really important to us but on things like furniture one day I’m heading out to shop for some good bargains and next thing I know my mom’s pulling up out front and we’re going shopping for the house. It was fun though, she helped me make this place as nice as it is because she has excellent taste.” she explains a smile twisting her lips as she talks about her family and it’s clear in her words, tone, and in the pictures around the space that she’s close with them and that their family is just as normal as anyone elses.
Lindsay: “It’s a beautiful space, you did a good job picking what fit the room and went together.” Lindsay says honestly impressed with her look into the first room and eager to see more of the house. “I have to admit though I love seeing kitchens, any chance we could explore there next?” she asks with a smile and a little laugh getting a laugh from Maxine as well before the young woman motions for them to follow and guides them across the hall into the kitchen space.
Maxine: “This is the kitchen, and a room I spend far too much time in which is why I work out with a guy who makes sure I don’t gain an unhealthy amount of weight.” Maxine says with a little laugh. She’s thin and tall but not skin-and-bones thin though her weight has gone up and down through the years like your normal person. Interviews with her in the past have shown she’s a woman who has a love for food and doesn’t focus on weight because she believes people of all shapes and sizes are beautiful and that the most important thing is being happy not being thin. She steps back once again to allow Lindsay and the camera to move around the room a bit and take it in; seemingly not worried about them exploring her space at all.
Lindsay: Lindsay laughs at Maxine’s comment and looks around the room her eyes drinking in the silver shine of the stainless steel appliances mixed in with the various shades of blue with whites, greys, and reds mixed in. The room has a nautical theme and Lindsay smiles as she picks up on a trend glancing back at the owner of the home. “Are your rooms themed? The living room seems earthy with the earth-tone colors and the paintings on the walls were off forest scenes, in here you’ve got the nautical feel with the colors and decorations.” she points out her observation watching as Maxine smiles and nods leaning a shoulder against the kitchen doorway with her arms crossed. Maxine: “Yes actually they are, I went nautical in here and my brother actually was the one who helped with this room, little known fact about Will is that he’s amazing in a kitchen. He helped me set this kitchen up so that he could come for a visit and have a kitchen he felt like cooking in? I swear if he wasn’t in politics like my parents he’d have been a chef and a really good one too.” the woman says with a happy smile as she glances around her own space that is set to her brother’s pickier tastes than her own for what should or shouldn’t be in a kitchen. The counters are a black granite and fit in with the white cupboards and light blue walls. There are various nautical things like a picture of a lighthouse and a ships wheel hanging on the wall along with salt and pepper shakers shaped like lighthouses and a few more things here and there that keep with the theme. There are accents of red and grey spread out through the room as well coming across well instead of a gaudy or over-done theme it’s very subtle and works well. The lighting is set to showcase the room and give anyone using it plenty of light to work by while making tasty dishes. “The door there next to the fridge leads down into the basement which is un-finished. I am eventually going to turn it into something I think but for now it’s just storage and the laundry room. Not really anything worth seeing.”
Lindsay: Finished looking around the woman’s kitchen she glances through a door connected to the kitchen into the dining room that is also connected to the hall. Stepping toward the door she looks inside hearing movement behind her as the camera and Maxine herself follow to check out the next room in the house. The dining room is decorated with a more formal/luxurious feeling and rich jewel-tones showcasing the color red. Above the table there’s a small chandelier and the table itself could easily seat twelve people comfortably. It’s a dark wood as well as the ‘bar’ and sideboard in the room. A china-hutch takes up a large portion of one wall showing off the tasteful pieces inside for eating on special occasions and the floor is a hardwood with a rug spread under the table and chairs. “Do you mind me asking the type of wood this is? It’s such a rich dark color.” Lindsay asks curious if the woman will even know.
Maxine: “It’s a dark cherry? I don’t know a whole lot about wood but my brother Jon does and he said it was solid.” Maxine answers and then smiles laughing a little earning odd looks from Lindsay and the cameraman standing in her dining room. “Sorry, I was just realizing how much my family helped me set this place up even though I said I wanted to be more independent with it all. Jon helped me pick out the dining room stuff like the floor and cabinets and he knows good places to look for this stuff. He knows quality with these things so I trusted his judgment on it all.” she explains in hopes of them not looking at her so strangely anymore “The china hutch was actually my grandmothers but my dad gave it to me for the house when I moved so I told Jon “find me matching things for this room” and he did. It all goes really well together I think.” she finished and glanced toward the French doors that opened out onto another section of the balcony on this side of the house. “Whenever you’re ready we can head upstairs?”
Lindsay: Listening as Maxine answered then explained her amusement Lindsay can’t help but smile at the woman finding her to be really down to earth and not your average daughter of those standing in any sort of spotlight. She seems respectful but has the outgoing and friendly personality of anyone. She so far has shown she has a sense of humor and her tastes aren’t overly grand just tastefully done and showing her creative side. The connections to her family while seemingly amusing to her are still something Lindsay can tell run deep and are full of love and care. At the mention of moving on to the upstairs she nods and offers a smile of encouragement, “Let’s head up then?”
Maxine: “Right this way.” Maxine says when it’s agreed they’ll move on to the upstairs and moves to the door out to the hall leading to the stairs found there tucked into a previously unmentioned door-frame. “The downstairs bathroom is just done in white and black, it has just the basics so no shower or tub or anything so I didn’t think to show it.” she explains knowing it’s not anything that would really be missed since there was not really anything special about it at all. Going up the stairs they end in a hall where you can either go left or right when reaching the top and she smiles. “Pick either way? The upstairs a little weird like it was designed to be two separate living spaces or converted to be that way?”
Lindsay: Following the path to the stairs and up them she shakes her head at the woman mentioning the bathroom not about to mourn the loss of seeing it since they’re seeing plenty of the house as it is. Reaching the top and being asked to pick a direction she smiles at the explanation and glances both ways. “Let’s go left first? That’s toward the side of the house with the kitchen and dining room correct?” she asks and gets a nod from Maxine as they all turn and start that direction heading past the short space into a more open area that is plain and empty.
Maxine: “This is what I’m calling the “guest wing” even though it’s not really a wing at all? I am either going to actually turn it into guest rooms or actually I’ve been thinking about getting someone to move into the house with me to split the bills and so I’m not always alone? This would be their space if I did. This first room here is like a sitting room type of space? If you go through the door to the right…” she says and moves to the door opening it and pushing it wide so they can see into the plain white bathroom beyond it that’s bare of any decoration. It’s a decent size fitted with a shower, sink, toilet, and plenty of space to move around but not overly-large. “This is the bathroom for this area of the upstairs and this bathroom connects both to the sitting room and to the bedroom through here…” she explains pulling open a second door and stepping into another empty room that’s fairly large. “It’s a good size, this side of the house though isn’t as big as the right side upstairs, My room’s are bigger but this is still not bad at all considering.” she finishes with a smile letting them look around. There is a door off the back that leads to a porch that is found only on the back of the house on the upstairs. Moving toward that door Maxine pulls it open for them to see the covered porch that has a table and some comfortable looking chairs set up on it. “This is a shared space since my own bedroom opens out onto this porch as well.”
Lindsay: Following as they’re led through the “guest wing” of the upstairs Lindsay can appreciate the space and thinks it has potential to become something nice with the right person in it. Listening to the girl she’s reminded again how she’s taken on living alone independently instead of off her parent’s money. Having someone move in to help with the bills and things seems a wise decision if the girl is careful not to let someone in who’d ruin her home. Thinking about the girl’s parents Lindsay has no doubts anyone moving in would be checked out before stepping foot onto the property. “It has potential to be very nice. Do we get to see your room now?” she asked with her own girlish grin very curious to see this woman’s personal space and find out what her style is in her room.
Maxine: Laughing lightly and nodding Maxine pushes the door to the “guest wing” closed as they’re out on the porch. Moving across to her own bedroom door she wiggles the door handle a few times and bumps the door with her hip before turning the handle to pull it open. A faint blush touches her cheeks as she holds the door open for them to go inside. “My door needs to be fixed, you gotta encourage it to open from the outside.” she explains and waits for them to go inside before following and pulling the door closed with a sharp click that means it’s actually closed not just pretending now that it was opened once already. “And this is my bedroom.”
Lindsay: Watching the girl open her door Lindsay laughs lightly understanding the need to sometimes play to the whims of your home. “Basement door in my own home is pretty much the same way so I understand perfectly.” she assures the woman before taking her chance to slip into the room getting her first look at it. The room is done in shades of purple with white, grey, green, and blue accents. Three of the walls are painted white with the remaining wall painted purple behind the headboard of a massive light wood sleigh bed. The other furniture in the room matches the bed’s light wood and keeps with the color theme showing a comfortable space. There is a wardrobe along one wall and 2 doors that go out toward what had been the “sitting room” in the guest wing. “Purple was a nice choice in here, very comfortable feeling.” Maxine: “Purple is my favorite color…and I like it.” Maxine answers with a grin glancing around her bedroom and biting her lip forgetting to stop herself from giving into that bad habit for a moment as she considers what to say. Spread out through the room are things she’d collected through her life and a few pictures. On one wall she has shelves that hold more personal items as well as books and on that same wall is a dresser with a mirror. “Okay so my room, I will never listen when anyone tries to tell me their bed is more comfortable than mine because it simply can’t be true…I love my bed. The dresser and wardrobe I got an amazing deal on from the guy who actually built this house. Harvey Benedict…he owns a construction company and does pieces like furniture and things on the side I think?” she explained and moved across the room opening the door that seemed like it would lead out to the “sitting room” revealing a large closet instead. “This was installed when I moved in, I didn’t need all the space in the other room so I had them bump the wall out and put this behind it for all of my clothes since it’s not a secret I have a love of shopping.” she explains with a laugh glancing into the deep closet and turning on the light to reveal the racks and cubbies and things inside. It’s organized and neatly kept for her clothes and there seems to be some sort of color/style pattern to the organization of the space. Closing the door again after turning the light back off she moves to the other door on that wall opening it to reveal the sitting room.
Lindsay: Taking in the details of the room curiously and half-tempted to go into that closet to look at things Lindsay resists the urge and waits as the woman explains her space before opening the other door signaling they’re done in her bedroom. Moving out of her personal space and into her comfortable space Lindsay looks around taking in the new room revealed to them seeing a desk covered with books and a laptop in one corner which seems to be where the girl would work on her college assignments or things. The rest of the room is set up like a smaller living room and the whole space has more of the purple to it only not as much. There is a TV in here and Lindsay remembers not seeing one in the bedroom itself, there’s a comfortable looking couch and chair as well as more shelves and out here more pictures of her family and friends on them. “You play video games?” she asks without thinking as her eyes land on the games themselves mixed in with a collection of dvd’s and things.
Maxine: Glancing around her space to make sure it is as clean as she thought it was she waited as Lindsay looked around taking in the room and it’s more simple purple theme. Hearing the surprise at seeing the games and things Maxine can’t help but laugh lightly and nod, “Two older brothers…it was play video games or spend a whole lot of time alone. I’m pretty good at wrestling away remotes and distracting other players too. Tricks my brother’s taught me.” she explained with a laugh and smiled moving to the bathroom door pushing it open for them to be able to see in there as well. “Bathroom’s more purple of course and a little bigger than the one in the “guest wing”. I have a tub here too where that side only has a shower and there’s a full length mirror in here that’s treated so it doesn’t fog up.” she described actually glad when they didn’t go inside just looked from the doorway. Glancing around to see if there was anything else to explain up there her eyes skimmed over the room before she turned to look at her two guests again with a smile. “Downstairs porch and back yard?” she suggested unsure if they wanted to see them but willing to show if they did. Getting the nod she led the way through the room into the upstairs hallway to lead back downstairs. Once getting there she paused as her phone rang and bit her lip holding up a finger to signal “one moment” before slipping through the kitchen door to grab it and check the caller ID. Pushing the answer button fully aware her guests would be able to hear and would probably record she answered anyway. “Better be important Will, I’m trying to get more famous by showing off my house.” she answered with a laugh her tone clearly joking since anyone who knew anything about her would know she wasn’t one who went reaching for any kind of fame. She listened a moment and glanced toward the clock nodding to herself. “Yeah alright give me an hour then I’ll head over to the airport. See you then.” she said before hanging up and giving Lindsay and the cameraman a sheepish smile. “Really sorry about that…you can edit it out? I told them not to call unless it was important so I had to answer.”
Lindsay: Shaking her head Lindsay smiled at the girl waving away her worries kindly, “Oh don’t worry about it. It’s just another part of seeing your home and how you enjoy it.” she said to put the girl at ease about it stepped back as Maxine moved into the hall again leading the way toward the back of the house opening that door to lead out onto the porch and to show the back yard. “Oh this is lovely.” she said at seeing the comfortable set up of chairs and outdoor furniture on the porch then looking further and seeing the decent sized fenced in lawn that was well kept and had a fire-pit with its own seating around it and a gazebo type of space. Seeing no pool there wasn’t surprising to Lindsay since they weren’t far at all from a beach that could be used for swimming instead of a pool. “Do you spend a lot of time out here in nice weather?” she asked noticing the grill and shed as well curious what was in the shed but not about to ask to see it.
Maxine: Maxine showed them the back porch and yard smiling to herself as she nodded in agreement to it being lovely. Letting them take in the decoration of the last area she’d be showing she nodded again to the question asked, “Yeah actually I do…It’s nice out here and having fires in the pit is great when you have friends over or family. My dad was the one who set up the pit, built it actually since we took those stones out of a path that had been laid back here. It led to a little garden that I would just kill if I tried to keep it up so we sold the plants and had them moved out to whoever bought them before filling it in and putting grass seed over it so it would be just like the rest of the yard. Didn’t want to waste resources so we turned the stone path into the fire pit when my dad suggested it.” she explained and thought a moment before turning and leading the way around one side of the house on the porch back to the front door. “And now we’re back where we started…”
Lindsay: Nodding to hearing her father’s part in building the fire pit Lindsay smiled and followed the woman back around to the front of the house turning to smile at her offering a hand to shake. “Thank you very much for the tour Maxine, your home is lovely and we hope you’re happy here and achive your goals in becoming a reporter.” she said surprised when the girl took her hand shaking it but then giving her a quick hug and a smile. She returned the hug charmed completely by the woman and her home.
Maxine: Smiles considering the offered handshake and taking it before giving the woman a hug as well because she seemed like a woman who wouldn’t mind a hug. They had done a lot of talking and some prior meets before the actual walk through so she’d gotten to know Lindsay while arranging everything and felt comfortable with her. “Thank you very much. Have a nice day and stop by for a cup of coffee sometime.” she said her tone a little playful as she blew a kiss at the camera in her own cheeky sign off.
Well this has been our look into the home of Maxine Kahle, a charming young woman with a bright future in front of her. Tune in next time to see another look into the home of….
The broadcast tapers off away from her own part and she turns it off smiling to herself as she munches on some popcorn hoping not to get playful-snarky comments from her brothers but knowing she will anyway.
The After Effects. Voicemails
“Max…seriously? You told whoever watched that thing about my cooking? Really? Come on now you knew Jo would be watching this and now she expects me to cook her dinner. Evil little sister. Your place looks great on screen by the way and you shouldn’t have been nervous you did just fine. Call me back when you get a chance to let me know about that gala cause mom’s driving me crazy asking if somehow you told me whether you were going instead of her alright? Better yet call mom. Love you.” - William Kahle - Brother
”You deserved it for the time you spilled your wine on me at that dinner with those foreign guys. You know exactly what I’m talking about Will. But thanks I take being evil as a compliment when it comes from you. Ughhhhh I know I know I need to give her an answer on whether I can make it to that or not. Alright I’ll call her don’t worry but tell Jo I say hello and give my neice or nephew kisses and aunty love for me since I think Jo would find it weird if I walked up and kissed her stomach next time I saw her. Love to you and Jo! –kiss sound-”
“To start, call mom will ya she’s driving us bonkers when really she should be driving you bonkers. Something about a gala? I don’t know. Call her. Second when did you go back to blond? Thought you were giving red or brown or something a try? Either way you looked great and it went perfect. See no worries you are one of us after all. Who knew? I could have sworn you were from a different planet. Alright gotta go cause Jack’s here. Call mom. Love ya Maxie. – Jonathan Kahle - Brother
”Yeah Yeah Yeah, Will already delivered the “call mom” message now you’re the broken record instead of him for a change. Speaking of did you see that interview he did last week? Ouch, don’t think he was expecting half those questions and he kept repeating himself. Poor Will. But thanks for calling and telling me how gorgeous I look even though you’re a jerk for not keeping in touch as much. I’ve been blond again for about three months now were you living under a rock out there in California? This is what you miss when you move so dang far away alright? Come visit soon I miss you and you promised to show me how to kick will’s ass at that game…-finger snapping sound- crap I can’t even remember the name anymore that’s how long it’s been. Haha to the “other planet” joke, is this you trying to mix things up from the “are you sure you’re not adopted” jokes? Either way I love you and I’m going to call her I swear…I honestly don’t know why she’ll call you in California before she calls and reminds me I need to give her an answer. Crazy woman who raised us Jon…seriously. OH I’m going to ruin Will’s life and tell you before he can that they’re having a boy. Haha. Now he and I are even. Love you brother dearest and give Jack sexy kisses from me! –double kiss sound-”
“Maxine I just got a chance to see that show where they went through your house. Looks good darling. You could have been a little more upbeat though? You did really well but a bit more energy wouldn’t have gone amiss. Also you’re very independent don’t doubt it. We just like to help and make sure you have what you need. Just in case your brother’s haven’t called yet and haven’t mentioned this which I doubt please call your mother. Save us menfolk from her talk of dresses and “if’s” please? Love you sweetie.” – William Kahle – Father
”Hello Papa. I know energy but I was tired that day and actually really not sure what to expect even though we talked it out before she came. Either way people seemed to like it so don’t worry. Thank you papa I know I’m independent but sometimes I am afraid of just being seen as a by-product of an awesome family? Gonna make you proud my own way though I swear it. They did actually call me, can you ever explain to me why she calls everyone but me to ask about this? Will and Jon were the ones that asked that not me but they raise a good question there. Alright gotta get to class I love you too papa.”
“Oh sweetie you looked amazing for that interview about your house. Simple but still beautiful and the house is as lovely as I remember it from when we were there last. Don’t listen to your father if he calls and talks about energy, you were perfect. Also sweetie are you planning to come to that gala with me? I would really like it if you did and I have a dress already picked out for you. I promise you won’t be too bored sweetie since you like fashion. Give me a call, love you.” – Lauren Kahle – Mother
”I think I looked a little lazy but long night of studying before that, glad it didn’t show too much. The house hasn’t changed, I like it too much to want to change it too much. I know what papa’s like it’s no problem if he wants to grumble about energy like he did. Now onto something important? Yes I can make it to the gala but I can’t stay the night I gotta fly back that night after it so if that’s possible then I’ll go and is it the blue dress you sent me a picture of? Because that dress is gorgeous. So let me know about the flight things and we’ll sort it all out. Oh and mama? Please just call me when you need an answer on something? You know I need reminded sometimes so just call and ask or send a text or something and I’ll give you the answer. Alright gotta run to work. Love you mama.” [/style][/style]
