Nick was staring at the television screen in his office as he watched the news breaking on the hurricane that would wind up directly in their path. "Shit..." He muttered. At the first mention of the hurricane coming, Nick flipped the television off and got right down to business. The building he owned that acted as his headquarters and training facility for the men and women that worked for him was more than a secure enough place for the lot of them to hunker down, so Nick put out a call to all of his operatives and told them to get their families inside and locked down once everything at home was taken care of.
With that in mind, Nick hopped into his SUV and headed immediately for home after a quick stop in at the closest supermarket where he loaded up two shopping carts with canned goods. He had a few crates of MREs back at the compound, but one could never be too sure and he had no idea how many people would wind up being housed under his roof. He worked through most of the morning boarding up windows and taking whatever measures he could to help prevent some of the flooding that he knew was bound to happen. It was one of the risks you ran when you had beachfront property. He was still in the middle of getting the windows boarded up when Yulia started walking up the driveway after work. The last thing he had wanted to do was panic the hell out of her before full fledged news of the hurricane coming in broke loose and people wound up in a panic over it.
"Hey..." He called as he screwed in the last of the screws holding up one of the boards on one of the windows. He was sweating and tired from the frantic work, but he felt better the moment he saw Yulia. "Looks like we're going to be hunkering down at work for a little while. They're going to wind up evacuating beachfront properties first and foremost with the storm coming." He said, using as calm a voice as he could manage. "So I want you to do me a favor... Go inside and pack up a duffel bag. Pack up warm clothing, grab as many blankets and pillows as you can find and toss them in the back of the SUV, okay?" He asked of her.

Yulia was glad to be back at the flower shop again, the owner had closed it down for just a few days to sort out a few things and get a security system put in since they hadn’t done that before with never having a problem at the shop. She was glad for it now though not wanting the owners to have to worry at night now or anything and a little more secure in knowing it was there so she’d hopefully have a job longer if they didn’t get robbed some night during or after closing. Spending the day arranging the flowers and sending them out to be delivered to people she enjoyed the work and got a few to bring home with her because they were extras and it was just something nice the owners did now and then.
Walking home was a bit farther than down the block now that she’d moved in with Nick but the weather wouldn’t be an issue till it got icy. She’d just buy herself a good pair of boots to wear and carry her work shoes in a bag or something so she wouldn’t worry about slipping and falling. Grabbing her things when the owner said they’d be closing up early she checked that everything was okay and heard that they were closing because of the incoming weather. Wondering if Nick knew about it she considered texting him but figured if the owners of her flower shop knew then Nick would know. She could see people moving around town getting ready for this storm and pulling out her phone she checked her signal before hitting a weather site to see what exactly was going on. The reports worried her a bit and her steps got a little quicker as she got closer to home.
Walking up the driveway she saw Nick putting up boards on the windows and bit her lip coming to a stop by him glad he was there. ”Hello..” she said back and nodded as he spoke about hunkering down at work and the beachfront properties being evacuated. Chewing on her lip as she glanced around she tried not to worry too much right now since he was making sure the house was as secure as it could be. Looking back as he spoke again she gave him a little smile and nodded once more, ”I can do that. Do you want me to pack up some of the food from the kitchen too?” she asked thinking they might need it if they were hunkering down for the storm at his work. ”And is there anything you need moved away from windows inside just in case?” she added knowing that the house would probably be fine boarded up but better to be safe and not lose anything important.

Nick looked at her a moment. She was so damned level-headed right then and there that he wanted to kiss her. She was doing remarkably well at the moment and he definitely appreciated that fact. It was damned nice knowing that she trusted him enough to keep them safe through this and he absolutely would. There was no doubt in his mind about that. He'd lived through Hurricane Katrina for christ sake. He'd damned well make it through this too.
"Grab anything that doesn't need to be cooked from the kitchen. I already did a lot of stocking up and everything's already in the back of the truck, but it wouldn't hurt. I'd rather have too much than not enough." He murmured as he headed inside the house with her. "I think everything should be okay for the most part around here but..." He paused a moment and looked at her. "I know this is going to sound a little screwed up, but we need to take everything from my gun cabinet with me. The last thing I need is for the house to be totaled and some kid wind up finding one of my sidearms on the beach somewhere." He pointed out. "We have plenty of time to do all of this, Yulia, so don't start thinking the storm's going to come crashing down around us at any minute."
He paused a moment and looked at her, unable to resist pulling her into his arms for a moment. "This is what I was talking about all those times in the past when I told you you were braver than you gave yourself credit for." He said, smoothing his hands over her hair for a moment with a smile on his face. "I'll be back from the spare room in a minute, all right?" And with that, he ducked into one of his rooms that he used as both his office and his personal armory per se and began packing up all of his guns into carrier cases.

Yulia might freak out a bit inside or just wait until later when everything was done to have her little freak out over the coming storm but right now things needed done to make sure everything was ready to handle the storm. She could freak any time but they only had the time before the storm actually came in to get things done and while it wasn’t going to appear in the next few seconds that didn’t mean they had all the time in the world. She could handle this because even though it was a serious situation this wasn’t anything to do with her past or her fears, this was a nature thing and everyone would be dealing with it not just her. Strength for these kinds of things came easy.
She nodded as she listened to him talk about how she should grab anything that didn’t need to be cooked though he’d already gotten things. She couldn’t find any fault in him thinking it was better to have too much then not enough and made a mental note to grab candles and things too just in case while she was at it. She figured he might have one of those generator things wherever they were going but candles were always handy as a back-up and she knew where he kept them now after Halloween. ”Alright I didn’t know if there was anything around a window you wanted moved somewhere safer.” she said and paused to look at him when he paused. The mention of his gun cabinet and needing to take the things that were in it had her a little worried but she would be even more worried if anything happened like he mentioned and a kid found it or something. ”I’ll let you handle that stuff since you know how to handle it…I’ve got food, blankets, pillows, towels, candles, and anything else we might need since better safe than sorry….you get your guns and make sure the house is secure as it can be.” she said not planning on grabbing anything ridiculous to take just things that made sense and might actually be needed. ”I know…little windy but not too bad yet. Won’t rush but I’m not going to dawdle either.” she said understanding what he was saying and appreciating his way of helping her stay calm.
She was a little surprised when he pulled her into his arms but after only a few seconds of pause she wrapped her arms around him in return hugging him tight for a moment before looking up at him as he spoke giving a little smile. ”Storms not anything that pushes my buttons…and I’m with you so I know I’ll be safe even if it were going on right outside this house this very moment.” she said in answer of his pointing out her being brave. Reaching up she let herself touch her fingers to his cheek a moment before nodding and letting her hand fall again. ”Alright do what you need to I’m going to get on to getting stuff together and out to the truck.” she said moving to get things into her bag real quick before moving on to get the other things as well putting stuff into the truck as she went packing it up as neatly as possible for quick unloading as well and easy way to find anything they might need while leaving room for the guns and things he would pack.

Nick listened to her, damned proud of the fact that she was able to hold it together. Honestly, from what he'd been seeing of the general public out there, it was damned near mass hysteria. He was glad that he had one of the women that could hold it together and get the job done, but he wouldn't blame her in the least if she wound up in meltdown mode after the fact. Unfortunately, weather was a part of life and mother nature had one hell of a ride in for the lot of them all. Truthfully, if anyone was overreacting or having a hard time pushing thoughts to the back of his mind, it was Nick. After having lived through Katrina, he'd been hoping never to see a tropical storm again. But he couldn't be so damned lucky.
Nick had to smile at her understanding of just what he was doing. She was remarkably calm at the moment, but he needed her to remain calm. He had no right to be proud of her at the moment, but he damned well was.
Once the pair of them parted, Nick put his mind back to the task at hand. He grabbed a few towels from the linen closet down the hall and tossed them near the door of the room his gun collection was in. He dragged out a series of metal cases outfitted for the weapons he had and sometimes had to transport with him and packed each of them away. In a matter of minutes, he was slamming the lid on the cases closed and bringing them out to the truck. Next came the towels. He looked at the job that Yulia had done in collecting everything and smiled. "Good job, Sweetheart." He encouraged her before locking the door to the house. "All ready to go?" He asked.

Yulia was glad to be able to help out with getting stuff sorted out for this, glad that he wasn’t treating her like someone who’d fall apart at this bit of stress in their lives. She had lived in Florida and hurricanes there were just what happened. Not easy and very scary but survivable and part of life. She knew the importance of keeping a level head in this particular kind of situation and she could handle it. She would admit to being glad she was with Nick right now, because he wasn’t a man who freaked out easily or who didn’t have a sense of what to do in a serious situation. She’d seen people freak out over stuff like this before, normally it got them hurt and that was a danger in anything that scared you.
Looking around she made sure she got the essentials and even a few things like batteries, flashlights, ziplock bags, and phone chargers as she came across them before deciding she had everything that they could need without taking the whole house. The storm hopefully wouldn’t last more than a day or two so they would be getting back to the stuff they were leaving behind in a day or two hopefully.
Looking over as he brought out the cases for his guns she looked at the stuff in the back of the truck and smiled at him nodding. ”Foster family had a system for when hurricanes were coming…we ran drills since they helped out with one of the local shelters for this stuff so I know how to pack up quick and load.” she said as she watched him lock the house. ”Yep I’m ready.” she said reaching back to tug at the ponytail she’d held her hair back with pulling it free again for the moment and pulling the hairtie onto her wrist knowing she’d put it back up when they were unpacking the truck.

Nick listened to what she said about her foster family having run drills for this kind of thing. "So you're pretty used to all of this then, huh?" He asked her with a little smile. It never hurt to be prepared where any situation like this was concerned. It really didn't. "I was in New Orleans when Katrina struck." He admitted to her. There was a hint of pain in his eyes as he recalled the hurricane that had done so much damage to his beloved city. "That was tough to watch and live through. I was out there with the Reserves sandbagging and helping with the rescue efforts and this..." He looked up at the sky. "This is nothing compared to that." He admitted to her.
He got into the driver's side of the truck and waited for her to get into the passenger side. Once she was in and buckled down, he hit the road, heading for the compound. He knew that he'd never brought a civilian there, but desperate times called for desperate measures. There was no group of people that would want to keep the men and women involved in his company safe than the people that loved them most of all. That was the number one reason he knew that bringing them to the compound was the right decision to make. And at the heart of it all, it didn't matter so long as everyone was safe and sound.
Nick pulled the truck right around the the back of the compound through a gate that he had to input three different security codes into in order to get through in the first place. "Wait here just a second. I'm gonna open the door. Crawl into the driver's seat and pull the truck in once I have it open, all right?" He said as he pulled the truck up to a giant roll up door. A few moments later, he was opening the door from the inside. He waited until Yulia had the truck inside before he closed the door behind her and slid the locking mechanism through their holders. These were more or less the loading docks. Nothing terribly special.
"We're gonna offload the stuff from here and bring it into the training facility. It's probably the safest place in the building." He admitted to her. Most likely because it was, more or less, made of what was formerly a nuclear fallout shelter from World War II. He popped the back of the truck open and got right to work carrying some of the heavier stuff while he left some of the lighter stuff for Yulia to take care of.

Yulia nodded to his question about her being pretty used to it and shrugged a little after, ”Yeah I mean…in some areas it’s just common practice to know what to do just in case. Florida is one of those places.” she said as an explaination and looked over at him as he mentioned hurricane Katrina. She could see the pain as he talked about it and reached out to lightly touch his arm as a show of support before glancing skyward as well before focusing back on him. ”I think…this may not be as bad for what it is…but on a whole other level it’s a lot worse since the people here at the moment are a lot more scared which is means they’re dangerous with just their fears about this storm guiding them?” she said thoughtfully thinking about the people she’d passed in town who seemed pretty freaked out over what was going on. It wasn’t even huge news yet that she was aware of, though it might have been announced by now, she just figured that people freaked out and disorganized were far more dangerous than any area that had a system and was at all used to this threat as a general rule. She wasn’t trying to say Katrina wasn’t horrible because it was but it was a different situation and right now she was worried what people would do facing this since there were plenty of injuries and things that were caused by people just being scared not the storm itself sometimes.
She looked out the window as Nick drove not really paying a whole lot of attention to where they were going other than the general direction and landmarks. She was lost to her own thoughts for a few minutes until they’d pulled to a stop at a gate and he was entering security codes. Listening to him as he explained what they were going to do she gave him a little smile. ”Got it.” she gave a quick nod and slid into the drivers seat once he was out of the truck. Waiting until the door was open she pulled it inside and parked it turning off the engine and grabbing the keys to give back to him as she climbed out. ”Alright just lead the way so I know where we’re going.” she said tucking the keys into her pocket for the moment and grabbing some of the stuff to carry in with him helping to get all the stuff inside and careful not to touch any of the things that held guns or weapons of any sort since even safely in cases she knew she shouldn’t be messing with it at all.

Nick nodded at her words. It wasn't as bad as Katrina, but he knew that the people here had no idea what to expect. A lot of his guys had lived in this part of the country most of their lives and didn't know what to expect either. It was scary shit for a group of people who were mostly used to being able to control their environments and now... Now this was something they couldn't control save to help ease the blow of some of the damage that they were going to wind up suffering. Nick knew he'd hated the hell out of feeling helpless when Katrina had rolled around. He'd hated it so damned much. Human nature was a funny thing. While Nick and the rest of his teams natures had, more or less, been reprogramed over the years so that survival was their number one concern, it didn't mean that the same would apply for everyone else out there. That being said, Nick didn't doubt that he'd be one of the first out there, rolling up his sleeves and helping in the aftermath of everything.
Nick lead her into the facility and down into the training area where he figured everyone would be the safest. He'd put the all-call out a short while ago and knew the guys would start arriving at any given moment. It wasn't long before the truck was unpacked and Nick felt that they were decently organized for the time being. He knew that, in the after effects of what was happening a number of things that he had laying around the compound would go a long way towards helping a lot of people. He took a moment to look at Yulia. "If you feel uncomfortable at any given moment, feel free to let me know." He said rather bluntly. "I know that this is going to be your first time around a group of people like this, Yulia, but I want you to know that you can rely on me, all right?"

Yulia understood that the situation was serious if they were evacuating homes and moving people to secure locations. She was amazingly prepared for this sort of thin though since she’d been through it before. It was one of those rare times where she actually felt ahead of the world around her instead of constantly behind and confused. Even in her own mind she knew that was a horrible way to think because a big storm like this wasn’t supposed to make her feel normal or anything but she couldn’t help it really. It was just one of those things that was odd but a fact of her strange and sometimes horrible life. She knew how to handle this and how to help out after and even if she wasn’t big on strangers she’d still be willing to help out however she could because it was the right thing to do. She didn’t know what she’d do to help but she’d find some way.
Following Nick she paid attention to where they were going so she could help unload and get things sorted out. She knew that he was bringing in the other members of his team as well and while that made her a bit nervous she also thought that maybe it was a good thing. She would know the faces and people at least a little in case she needed to know them later or when they went on the christmas trip this would let her know who they were going with at least. She wanted the people Nick cared about to be safe and he cared about his team so knowing they and their families were secure would make him feel better which mattered to her. Looking over at him she gave a little smile and nodded glad he understood her without her having to say a word, no one else had ever gotten her that way before and it was actually really nice. ”You’ll be the first to know…but I think I’ll be okay. I have my past experience in this…well not this exact situation but ones similar to fall back on. Normally I just find myself a corner to hide in until I settle when I’m somewhere with a group of strangers that I can’t just leave.” she said so he would know if he saw her in a corner that nothing was really wrong so much as she was just finding what little nerves she had to deal with situations that made her uncomfortable.

Post by zander on Nov 1, 2012 16:49:17 GMT -5
This was not Zander's idea of a good time. For once, he was thankful for the fact that Biz was working a job on the other side of the country away from him. It meant that he didn't have to worry about how safe she'd wind up being in the middle of this storm. He had to worry about himself and the other people he worked with and that was good enough for him. But he made damned sure that he kept Biz updated via text message when he could manage it. But he had to wonder how long they'd wind up having cell phone services in the area. Zander drove both a Porsche and a pick up truck and figured the pick up was probably better suited for the job that day. That being said, he had swung by two other operatives houses and loaded their stuff up into the box of the truck before they all bee-lined it for Nick's compound.
Soon enough, Zander was pulling in to the compound through the back gate and, after opening it, he laid on the horn in front of the door. He knew that Nick would already be there. A few moments later, the door lifted up and Zander was able to tuck his pick up truck inside for the time being. Everyone climbed out and grabbed their respective gear before Zander finally turned around to the boss-man. "I'm assuming we're all gathering in the training ro-." He pulled up short when he realized that the little Brunette that Kira had been referring to was standing there with Nick. He paused a moment and gave her a smile before sticking out his hand. "You must be Yulia, right?" He asked with a smile. Nick looked irritated because he damned well knew Zander's track record with women. "I'm Zander. This is Tim and Mark. We're gonna go set up and get comfy. Maybe we'll even start singing campfire songs around a lantern, seeing as I don't think Nick'd appreciate us starting a fire in the training room." He gave Yulia a conspiratorial wink and headed past them with the other guys in tow.

He nodded at Yulia when she said that he'd wind up being the first one to know. He was thankful for that at least, but it didn't mean that he liked the visual of her hunkered down in a corner somewhere as she tried to decompress. He didn't like it at all. But there wasn't much he could do about it but give her her space and let her work through all of this in time. Nick didn't doubt that he'd be there every step of the way because he sure as hell had no intentions of going anywhere where she was concerned. This all went way beyond simply protecting her now. Nick never tried to let his emotions get involved in anything, and yet, with her, they had. He wasn't sure what it was about her, but he wasn't complaining.
He heard the horn outside of the door and knew that his operatives were starting to arrive. A quick look at a camera positioned above the door and he knew it was Zander there and it looked like he had two more of his guys with him. "And now the fun begins." He murmured as he opened the door and watched as Zander brought the truck in. Of all the guys to have shown up first, it just had to be the most smartass one of the group of them. Nick went to go nod at his question in regards to where they'd be hunkering down when he obviously caught sight of Yulia and stopped dead in his tracks. Nick scowled.
He knew well enough that Zander was a taken man, but he also knew that Zander was going to wind up giving him a hard time over all of this. And here he was now... giving him a hard time. "Hey. I won't mind you setting up a campfire downstairs if you're planning on dancing in it for us later." He muttered as he watched Zander shuffle off towards the training rooms. "He's kind of like my second in command. Good kid. Hell of a fighter." He admitted with a shrug. "You okay?"

Yulia knew her issues, knew what they could lead to and knew her ways of dealing with situations that made her uncomfortable. They weren’t things she could change about herself yet, she was a work in progress and some day she may be able to handle groups of strangers and not want to hide but today wouldn’t be that day. She would try her hardest not to do that because she didn’t want to worry Nick at all but she hoped he would understand if she just needed that moment to find what bits of inner strength she could gather together to make it through this storm here with people she didn’t know. She trusted Nick, and through him trusted his team, not to hurt her but knowing that didn’t mean her mind would put away it’s normal reactions to people she knew so she could just seem “normal” for the time being. She wouldn’t cause a disruption of any sort but she couldn’t promise not to be that quiet person hiding in the corner pretending she was alone.
Looking around at the sound of the horn she looked at Nick giving a little smile at his words, ”You sound excited for this...guess I should be too?” she said trying for a joking tone and probably failing. Not knowing the person who was coming in she stayed by Nick so she wouldn’t be “hiding” but felt safe in knowing he was close by. Listening she knew the second she’d been spotted, mostly because the man cut himself off and offered his hand as he addressed her instead of Nick like he’d been doing. Looking at his hand a moment she nodded, ”Yes I am…” she said forcing herself to do the polite thing and take his offered hand in a very brief shake before wrapping her arms around herself as she listened to him introduce himself and the others with him. She couldn’t help but smile at his comment about the fire and the wink before looking over at Nick and lifting an eyebrow at his comment about dancing on the fire. ”Thought we were here so everyone would make it through the storm uninjured and safe?” she asked not honestly a question really just her way of saying “he wasn’t rude so you shouldn’t be maybe?” to him without those specific words.
Taking a breath she nodded as he explained who Zander was and that he was a good fighter and good person. She did have to wonder if he thought the man was a kid and he looked older than herself though what he thought of her sometimes. It hadn’t seemed to be an issue at any point though so she didn’t comment on it or think more about it. ”Yes I’m fine…should we help them move anything they brought into the training center?” she asked and reached up to run a hand through her hair to brush it back off of her face.

Nick respected the fact that she would genuinely try to make it through this storm without making anyone else uncomfortable. And he knew she would because he knew Yulia a little too damned well, but that was besides the point. He doubted that she genuinely knew how he felt on the whole situation. He knew she would need her space. That was a given. He also knew that most of the people that wound up gathering here would wind up being male and she would need a little room to breathe once everyone got there. "Yulia, if you need somewhere to just decompress and be alone for a bit, feel free to use my office. It's off in the corner of the training area and still just as secure, all right?" He asked her. He didn't want her to feel uncomfortable.
He couldn't help but chuckle when she said that he sounded excited for it and that she should too. "Oh yes. I'm thrilled about being cooped up in here for God knows how long." He said. He wasn't going to add the fact that they were going to be cooped up in here with a bunch of other people again. He was sure she didn't need the reminder in all of it. "But hey, I don't think I'll complain too much about being cooped up in here with you." He grinned at her after a moment, unable to help himself. God, this woman did funny things to him. Nick watched as Yulia and Zander shook hands for a moment, trying to tamp down his protective instincts where Yulia was concerned. If he went rushing to her rescue at every turn of the corner, he'd only be asking for trouble for himself. Not to mention, she'd probably want to smack him away for crowding in on her every time.
Nick looked at her when she asked if they should give the others a hand moving stuff in, but he shook his head. "We moved enough food for everyone else plus all of our own gear and water, let them do some of the heavy lifting for the time being and you..." He paused a moment, smiling at her. "And I can start laying out blankets in one side of the training room because I'm pretty damned sure it's a safe bet that we're going to be here for the night." He said. He wanted to prepare her for it. "How do you feel about setting the women up in the office?" He asked her. "I know Auralee is going to be making an appearance here and, perhaps, one other woman by the name of Natasha." He said. "And I figured the three of you might feel a little more comfortable there, if you'd like."

Yulia was never the sort to want attention, if anything she shied away from it but with her issues normally she only ended up getting more because of them. She wouldn’t do that here thought she hoped, those who were coming in she could guess were mostly going to be male, yes that was a whole lot of buttons like a kid on an elevator pushing every one they can reach. She would do her best to keep it to herself though because this whole situation was about everyone coming together here to be safe in this storm so that was all that mattered. She would do her best not to draw attention and would just deal with whatever happened quietly. She ended her little internal pep-talk as nick started speaking so she could focus on him and not miss what it was he was saying. Giving him a little smile and nodding she reached up to push her hair back behind her ears in a nervous habit of hers. ”Alright, thank you for that…it’s actually helpful to know there’s somewhere I can hide out for a minute here or there.” she said knowing that just the knowledge that there was a space that she could go if she needed too would help her feel less trapped and would prevent any real freak-outs.
Giving him a smile when he chuckled she nodded a little and glanced around tilting her head. ”Do you don’t do monthly lock-in’s where you eat smores poptarts around the lantern fire?” she asked with a grin that showed she was actually trying to make a joke. She wasn’t the best at joking around and she knew it, normally her jokes were too much like real questions or sounded like she was being serious but she kept trying. It was another of those “normal” things she was trying to learn so she could function around normal people. She was going to just try to forget that she didn’t know the people who were coming here and maybe it would work for a little while if she used trying to joke? Smiling at his next words as well she nodded and reached out to touch his hand lightly not sure his stand on things like hugs or whatever when there were other people around. ”That’s not something I will complain about either.” she said honestly and meant it. Nick she could handle, he didn’t scare her at all and she was comfortable around him. The new guys she didn’t know though she wasn’t that comfortable around and making herself shake Zander’s hand wasn’t easy because it was contact that really bothered her most with strangers.
Watching them move off to unload their things and waiting for Nick to answer her question she resisted the urge to rub her hand on her leg since that would be rude. It’s not like she believed in cooties or anything it was just a reaction she had that she could only sometimes control and thankfully this was one of those times. Hearing his answer she smiled a little glad she could actually help here. It wasn’t much since she was just carrying things but it was still helping. His suggestion about laying out the blankets for the night since they’d probably be there was a good one and she nodded. ”Okay…Yeah let’s do that so we don’t have to worry about it later.” she said having figured they’d be there the night but with the way she rarely slept it would be okay since she’d just stay up through the night there. Listening to his question and as he spoke about the other women who could/would be coming in she nodded a little, ”That sounds like a good idea? I’m sure it will probably be appreciated.” she said and bit her lip thinking a moment. ”Is Kira coming in?” she asked knowing the woman worked for Nick and she was someone she was okay with since she knew her and had even gone shopping with her.
