life for phoenix before he was thrown in jail was not exactly a walk in the park. he was born in ogden, utah, to two parents who, at first, were pretty absorbed in their only son . for three years, it was safe to say that phoenix was the light of their life. the sole apple in their eye, so to speak. but that would soon change three years later, when phoenix's younger brother, anthony, was born. at that age, however, phoenix couldn't possibly begin to feel jealous over the amount of attention that his younger brother was receiving. even though, at the time, he was only three years old - it was physically and emotionally impossible for the boy. he remained cheery eyed and light hearted all throughout his childhood. it was only when he was ten and eleven did he begin resenting his parents - not his brother per se - for the way they were treating both of them, and how unfair it was. and that's probably when the good seed began turning bad. some people may argue and say that he was always a bad kid; throwing sand at other kids on the playground, eating chalk, looking up his teacher's skirt -- but that's not the case. not entirely, anyways. yeah, he was bad - all little boys were bad when they were younger. at some point in time, you're little boy is going to throw sand in someone's eyes. he's going to eat something he shouldn't have. and he's going to, eventually, look up a girl's skirt. phoenix just so happened to do all of the above, which was what worried his parents the most.
life in utah was about as normal as any life for a teenage delinquent could get. he did stuff he wasn't necessarily proud of, and said things that he didn't mean to his parents. of course, that was expected. at least the latter was, anyways. he never really got along with his parents too well. they were always bickering about one thing or the other, even when phoenix was younger. after a relocation because of one of his parent's jobs, phoenix promised himself that he would change himself. he would try, in essence, to become a better man. but of course, that wasn't about to happen any time soon. when they moved to myrtle beach, it took phoenix a while to settle into his new surroundings. it was a new school (at least for his senior year of high school), new friends, new ways to get into trouble. myrtle beach definitely differed a lot from what he was used to back in ogden, but he acclimated quickly, and soon he was back to his same old antics. his relationship with his parents worsened, but he was luckily still able to maintain somewhat of an okay bond with his younger brother, anthony. that, however, wouldn't make phoenix metaphorically see the light before he got himself in the most trouble he had ever been in.
the girl's name was noelle marsh. phoenix could possibly convince himself today that he was in love with her back then. and this little bundle of energy was the reason why, for three years, phoenix spent his life in jail.

rape. rape was the first charge phoenix heard when the judge was sitting before him, reading him off his charges. kidnapping. that was the next one. and then firing at a police officer. that was the last one. he had originally been put in for twenty years. he remembered listening to his sentence and thinking to himself "i just ruined my own life". of course, then he began refusing that this was reality. he hoped and prayed those first few months he was in his cell that this was all a horribly long and realistic nightmare he was having, and sooner or later he would wake up. but after the realization that this was real and happening, depression hit. and for the three years, he kept to himself. he did no one wrong, didn't pick any fights, and told on those who weren't obeying to the rules the prison wardens had set. his intentions initially weren't to necessarily debunk their theory that phoenix was an ill tempered, bad to the bone man. that's just the man who he had become when he was in jail at the time. the wardens noticed his behavior, however, and thought it was a mockery of themselves. they believed that he was just fooling around with them and playing mind games. but those weren't his intentions. not in the least.
you could say that prison had changed phoenix. you could also say that it has made him a much angrier human being. either way, you wouldn't be entirely far from the truth. he was mad as hell that he was in prison. and for the longest time, he blamed it on himself. he told himself that this was it. he was finally going to change and be the little prodigy his parents wanted and had gotten out of his kid brother. but it was kind of hard to get back in the good graces of your parents when they completely disown you. they probably visit phoenix once, maybe twice in prison, but it was only for the mere fact that they wanted to rub his nose in what he had done, which only further disturbed the beast he was holding in.
early release. when he heard those two words, it felt like a million weights had been lifted off of his shoulders. it felt like he had been given a new lease on life, and he could use it however he wanted to. good behavior, they said - which was odd, because he hadn't remembered being good. he was just being phoenix. well, in a way he was just being phoenix. the phoenix in prison and the phoenix outside of prison were two totally different people.

and then anger finally set in. and he knew who exactly he could channel all of his anger from.
her name was noelle marsh. and last time phoenix saw her, he swore that he was in love with her. but a lot had changed. he couldn't say that anymore. couldn't find it in him to say that he even wanted to see her ever again. after all, she was the reason why he was put into prison. she was the reason why he rotted away for three years, beating himself up for something he felt he had no control over.
shortly after his release, phoenix found he had to hit the ground running as far as finding a place to live and a job was concerned. he settled for a low hourly paying job as a bartender at sublime and moved over to the west side of myrtle beach. he soon discovered, coincidentally enough, he fit in with the people in the west side.
