"ginny? how could i forget that little angel. it's a shame what happened to her family, losing the grandmother is always hard. she grew up right down there actually, in that small house across the street from that quentin boy, who is still such a sweetheart. they were always getting into some kind of trouble with one another as kids. i believe there is still a warrant for the tractor that was driven into the lake, still there too, kind of a landmark here. she was always a nice girl, friendly too but she had a quick temper that was triggered by the strangest things. it seems that the shaker boy got the brunt of her anger most of the time but after what he did to her, infront of most of the town, i can understand why now. i hope she is doing well, she always did enjoy running into our backyard and hanging out with the dogs from time to time. always thought she would do something with animals but apparently her dreams were diverted. i had a duckling for some time that she would care for too, coming over everyday after school before running off to meet that shaker boy. they really were attached, it's such a shame what happened." - carla, ex-neighbor in myrtle beach
"haha yea this girl is my roommate, we share an apartment in the middle of greenwich village. i hardly see the girl, she is home late at night and up early the next day. from the few talks that we have had, she seems very driven and very focused on this new job of hers. she is constantly dressed for the part too as i hear nothing but heels at 8 in the morning and then again at 2 or 3. it's insane how much this girl works and she is not one for talking about her past. she seems very focused on her future, not wanting to turn back to the times that she had. i kind of miss the good coffee that she makes in the morning, she has no desire to speak of anything that has to do with her hometown even though, she's returned to it. i sent her a text this morning asking her how she was doing and she gave me a sarcastic reply, another trait that seems to be instilled in her. sarcasm is something that she speaks fluently but that always makes our conversations interesting. we have actually had many heart to hearts as i am not always good with my emotions and she seems to wear her heart on her sleeve. she is not afraid to say that she is pissed, like when i brought a dog home without her asking, though she warmed up to it fast or the time that the dog ate half her briefcase. of course...she did rush the animal to the vet. she gets warm spots for people it seems, but one strange thing is, i have brought plenty of guys back to the apartment..she has never brought home one." - patricia , roommate , nyc
"of course i know this girl, we have been friends since she arrived in nyc and we get a coffee every morning. that makes us sound really close but to be honest, i don't know much about her past. she is constantly talking, cause she talks a lot, about work, her family and her life here but i don't even know where she came from besides saying it's a place that she doesn't want to think about. it must have been pretty bad for her not to even want to think about it. either way, the topic is dropped fast and we discuss other things and people watch. she seems really interested in learning about other people but she only lets a few come close to getting to know the real her. i know that she works hard, we work at the same place after all, and when she gets to working, there is no stopping her. she is a stubborn and rather determined young lady, and yea, she's beautiful but she never seems interested in any guy. there is not one guy that i, myself, has come across that she has wanted to get to know. it's strange but i don't pry, it seems that her trust is hard to gain but easy to break and for a girl who is pretty guarded, she is a good friend and i would hate to lose a friendship like that" - christopher , coworker/friend, nyc
"i don't get how this girl finds anything on her desk but if you ask for a manuscript, she finds it instantly and hands it to you with a bright eyed, bushy tail look. she never brings her problems to work, infact, it's like she escapes from her reality here. a hard working girl, there is a reason that she got that promotion because she is driven, passionate, she endures everything that the staff put her through and she does it with a smile on her face. she is fair and just in her demands of the staff and though she is not top-dog, she is treated as such. the place is a bit of a disarray with her gone but she will return again and until then, we can make it without her." - felicity , coworker/editor , nyc
powerful memories
1) the day that she got her first dog, it was the same day that she lost the dog. it's a bittersweet memory for the girl but it makes her susceptible to be sympathetic towards animals. she was six years old, her father brought home a dog that was found at the junkyard and had seemed to take a liking to the male. she named him boxer almost instantly and snuggled with the dog while she was napping, gave it food, and then thought that he needed to go outside. ginny opened the door and the canine thought of freedom and took out the door, colliding with the grill of a car and it's life ended there. ginny felt horrible and it's the biggest reason why she will never leave behind a sick or helpless animal. her roommate brought home a dog that she found, and ginny freaked out until the dog got hurt and now it's more than welcomed into the apartment as she took it to the vet with a medical emergency after the canine ate some of her briefcase.
2) the first day that she met quentin was when she was seven years old, the second day of first grade. the boy had gotten in trouble for something and was forced to move tables-- an act that would forever seal their fate as star-crossed lovers. they talked, sharing crayons and learning together and while ginny was more of the listener than quentin was, she tried to get him to stop fidgeting with everything and to pay attention. she took charge of their friendship from that day on and it has never changed. it's one of her only memories from that time period, grade school, as the past is too clouded with other stuff. this memory is powerful because she can't help but wonder, what if. what if quentin had never moved tables, would they still be together? probably, they were meant to be...or they were.
3) discovering the duck egg in her neighbor's backyard because they had a nice pond there that would later be a scene of a crime that would be caused by the two best friends. she was nine when this egg was discovered and saw with no mother around that it would not survive. she ran it to her neighbor's house, secured in her sweater and begged them to take care of it because she would not be able to. they often took pity on the girl because she was neighborhood sweetheart and they agreed. for two years after that, ginny would return to that house everyday after school and feed and nurture the duckling to the full extent of her ability. eventually though, it became too big and was a little more aggressive as it matured into a full grown swan (swan egg, not duck egg but it's the same thing if you ask her). it needed to mate, to migrate and with a heart felt goodbye, the girl waved to her swan as it was loaded into a cage and driven off to be apart of the wild. she then proceeded to run to quentin's house and cry in his arms for another half hour as the boy comforted his friend.
4) grade eight and freshman year were all memorable for the girl because that was when the feelings, the hormones began to show quentin into a new light. she had dated a few boys in middle school, the little puppy dog crushes but they never worked out and she could never understand why. she was always the one to break it off, and always left with a confused feeling as to why it never felt right. the answer was given to her at the end of grade 8, graduation night, when she was reciveing her little diploma and quentin was standing up and cheering for her. she blew him a kiss and a wink and hopped off the stage and rushed to give him a hug, not caring if he had stand up to go into the line. she whispered that she could not have done it without him and kissed his cheek, and that was when everything felt right for them. they just kind of fell into the dating thing in the middle of freshman year, their talks became more intimate, their movie nights became more romantic and it was during homecoming night game and party that they finally established themselves as a couple, with a kiss.
5) their dating life was a bumpy one, there was no doubt about that. they often clashed in all of their values as ginny always wanted to get out of the small town and go to the big city and though quentin agreed, he never seemed interested. their beginning days were good, the first two years of high school went by well with small break ups and little fights but nothing major, nothing that separated them. they always knew that they wanted each other but their desire for the other impeded on their dreams and toward the last two years of high school, it was a confliction problem. this was the time that the bigger fights began to happen, yelling in the streets and the occasional slap in the head from her side of the argument. they would always make up though, their relationship, their love for one another was far too strong to break with something as simple as a fight.
6) he will claim that this is her fault and she says that it's his. this is yet another fight because she told him to go left and he didn't, he drove it straight into the pond and she went flying over the front and got soak and wet. she yelled at him for days after that as the cops were called, but they still don't remember whose idea it was to actually hotwire the thing and what possessed them to actually drive it but they did and it's still there. it got stuck in the mud and no matter how much pulling and pushing they did, it would not budge. this was the first time that the golden child got grounded, it was yet another huge fight for the couple but it was also a good laugh. no one really knows that they did it but it was unspoken knowledge because they were the troublemakers of the town. the two of them together was like a hurricane and a tornado combined and not even the police were able to stop them.
7) the day that she left is one that will forever be burned into her head because it's the most painful experience of her life, emotionally. her heart was shattered, her eyes watered for the first time in a while and it was all because of the man that she thought was going to stand by her for everything. she had gotten into a school that was located in the big city, far away from myrtle beach and the small town feel which was exactly what she wanted for years. there was no denying that virgina loved the town to death, it held memories that could never be replaced and characters that were one of a kind but it was not meant for her. she always felt that she was meant for more and with the car loaded up and hugs to her family and friends, she looked around for her companion on this trip. they were meant to be together in the city, allow him to find work before he found a place to go to school nearby, they had an apartment that was signed to her name to be shared and the plan was made, they just had to drive. shee saw him though, standing in the crowd with everyone else, no bags in hand, no intention of leaving with her. she said the only thing that came to mind which caused her grandmother to gasp as ginny told him to fuck off and she got into her car and that was it, she was gone, heartbroken and crying the entire drive up to her new home.
the future
this is what ginny has always looked towards since she had let the past vanish in her rearview mirror. she put the heartbreak behind her but it just seems to hurt that much more when she tries to move on from the shaker boy. it seems that no boy will ever be him and no relationship will ever match up to what they had. her apartment is nice but it's not like the house that she grew up in as it doesn't have the family that she had practically abandoned. but now, ginny is coming home for the funeral of a family member, a beloved one, her grandmother. the woman was who ginny was named after, she helped the girl through boys, school, pain, injuries, goals, accomplishments and now ginny is swallowing her guilt and her pride and returning back to myrtle beach for the funeral and for the affairs. she prays that the small town does not remember her as she has grown up in the four years or so since she had first left. her one goal is to keep her present, past and future apart and not let the memories affect her as much as they have been since she left.
