the girl was usually not too eager to read messages but this was had lit up the screen and continued to be lit on the screen as she glanced up to the bathroom which was closed and the sound of water running. she was not really sure if it was anger that was bubbling in her stomach or the idea that he had cheated on her, or the idea being planted in her head that he had cheated on her. she shook her head, read the message over once more with the hope that she had skipped over some words or there was a chance for a typo but it was all there clear as day and the blanket was quickly torn from her body as she stood up, running a hand through her hair. she dropped the phone onto the table, pushing it away with a disgust for technology at that particular moment. ”hey huntie..” |
[/i], the thought of that nickname being said with an elegant and more feminine voice than her own had her stomach churning, butterflies smacking against the lining and causing her to suddenly feel queasy, ”such a great time last time, let’s do it again..i’m free tonight, and you always have time for me baby”. the words seemed innocent enough and there was a part of lena that actually felt bad to jumping to such bold conclusions but he did it once, in a sense of betraying her, why not again? she tried to tell herself that he was a changed man but the text haunted her thoughts and she grabbed at the side of her head, trying to knock the words of the message out. she wanted to erase it but figured that would be rude and that behavior was unlike her. as the bathroom door opened, she jumped to both her own proximity to the door and the steam that rushed out, following hunter’s soaked form. her cheeks suddenly flushed, burning in a bright red tint, looking away and staring down at the ground as she had always done when they had first met. ”um..y-y-your…phone..”[/b] she commented, stuttering the words out with tears brimming in her eyes. the thing went off again, this time consecutively as someone was trying to get a hold of him and lena had a good guess as to who. the buzzing ceased after three and she raised an eyebrow, peering in the direction of the phone and narrowing her eyes at it. she felt ill and that was shown by the lack of eye contact and the hand that was resting against her lips, ”um…i…”[/b] she did not want to say that she had gone through his phone because that was so unlike her, and in reality, she had not actually looked through his messages or his contact. ”it uh..b-buzzed..a f-f-few times..”[/b] she finally let it out, side stepping to get out of his way and to stop his touch should he have made the move to do so. his touch would be the breaking point as she was already chocking down the feeling to cry, feeling like a pill was lodged in her throat at his moment. she rested her back against the wall, her small frame slumped in both tiredness and sadness while staring at the ground. she wondered who the female was, figuring that she was probably prettier, smarter, more hunter’s time and starting to realize how stupid she was for thinking that she even remotely good enough for him. Hunter couldn't believe how far they had come. He had all but moved into her place for the time being and he was happy. He was genuinely happy. He loved being with Lena. He loved knowing that when he went home every night, it was her he saw. And if anyone would have asked only a few months ago whether or not it would have been possible for Hunter to have fallen in love, they probably would have laugh hysterically and denied even the possibility of it. But there he was anyhow - completely and utterly in love with a girl that the rest of the world likely would have never thought him the type to fall in love with to begin with. But he was happy and he hoped to hell that he made her happy.
It had been a late night for Hunter, truth be told. But with him following politics and the fact that the political campaign and debates were on at that very moment, it was more or less to be expected of him and he thought that Lena more or less understood that. The approach that eh followed where politics were concerned was much different now than the one that he had followed months ago. He finally understood the appeal of the 'family man' and the settled down Republican rather than the shark who went after everything that he saw and, honestly, the approach appealed to him a hell of a lot more at the end of it all. This lifestyle with Lena appealed to him a hell of a lot more, even if she hadn't taken him up on the offer to move into a place that would suit the pair of them a little more. He wasn't going to push her on it. He'd deal with it all.
Hunter slipped into the apartment that night and had found her passed out on the sofa. There was the same, familiar old tension in his chest that he felt the moment he saw her. He loved her. There was no denying that fact, Even if no one else in the world understood that, he understood it perfectly well. She was beautiful and the sunshine in his otherwise empty life. He had thought he'd been happy carrying on the way he had been before, but that hadn't been the truth of it at all. He'd been miserable without her in his life and he needed her to feel any sense of completion. It all sounded sappy as hell and he knew it well enough, but it was the truth. He needed her. And he knew that she wasn't anywhere near ready to speak of the idea of marriage, but that was besides the point. He'd stick it out because he knew exactly where he belonged and where he wanted to be.
He draped a blanket over her sleeping form, smiling at her as she rested. He wasn't going to wake her. If he had to, he'd lift her up and move her off to bed himself. He forgot, for a moment, that he put his cell phone down on the coffee table next to her, otherwise he would have scooped it up so that it didn't wake her in the event that it went off. She looked peaceful at the moment and that was all that mattered to him. Hunter headed for the shower afterwards and climbed on in, letting the heat of the water work some of the tension of the day from his muscles. A few moments later, he finally emerged to find Lena jumping up from her position on the sofa. He glanced down at the lit screen on his phone and arched a brow.
He reached for her as she bolted after having told him that his phone had buzzed a few times. He couldn't even brush a hand against her. Shit. What had she seen? Hunter furrowed his brows as he crossed the room to his phone and cursed at what he saw on the screen there. He hadn't seen the woman in question since well before he'd met Lena. Truthfully, they had had an on again off again thing going on for a number of years and Hunter hadn't told her as of yet that he was a taken man because he'd simply forgotten about her. Hunter didn't even bother with clothes. This was something that needed to be taken care of immediately. He kept the towel wrapped around his waist as he finally spotted her on the ground and paused in front of her. "Lena..." He said gently. "I haven't seen her since well before I even met you. Honestly." He wasn't going to tell her that the woman in question was a model from California or that'd wind up feeding fire to more of her doubts and fears at the moment.
"I told you when we went into this that you were the only woman for me. The only one. I've been faithful and true to that statement... To you. And I know you have no reason to believe me now, but I'm asking you to let me prove this to you." He murmured. He didn't want to touch her just yet in the event that she bolted all over again. He needed her to understand that he loved her and that this here was all a misunderstanding that he would set right in only a few moments.
