mon dieu, you are an adorable bébé, belle. when your papa brought you home you lit up the room, despite the damper of your maman's health. we employees rejoiced, spent hours by your crib just watching you as your papa returned to the hospital to be with your maman. though i, as your nounou, will be primarily looking after you, besides your parents of course, you must know that you have a family here. your biological parents will not be the only ones in this house who care for you, though by the time you are able to read this journal i'm sure you will know that. we, the other servants and i, wanted to write this for you so that you will have a record of your childhood, the days you may not eventually remember. of course, once you're old enough to, you can pick up the pen and write your own story. until then, we're more than happy to narrate it.

your papa has spent these last few days with the two most important women in his life, you and your maman. he does not want you to become ill returning to the hospital, though, so he travels often between home and hospital to spend as much time with you both as possible. and while he is away, we servants dote on you.
we brought you to the garden, today. walked through your maman's beautiful flowers, showed you the pretty birds at the fountain. oh, how jealous i am of you to grow up in this home. you will have an amazing life, belle. i promise.

the mood is somber today, belle. your father will not be returning to the hospital any more, your maman has passed on. belle, i want to tell you now, though you may not wonder of it for many years, but this was not your fault. your maman was an amazing woman, we all loved her, and she loved you. a more generous woman was never alive, but i'm sure you'll hear much of that when you're older.

the house has been a whirlwind of activity for the last while, not much time for writing and not too much to say, but the time much be made today to wish you a happy 'birthday', princess. one month is a great milestone to achieve, one of many to come. we held a party for you, today, maurice, the chef, created a cake just for you. of course, you didn't have much, but it was the thought that counted. here's to many more 'birthdays' to come.

your papa has left you with us, he's going on a business for a few weeks. it's okay, he knows his little ange will be well looked after by all of us. you cried when he handed you to me, though, and reached after him with your tiny little hands. he laughed and came back to hold you for another minute before finally leaving, and he must have said something to you in that minute that calmed you because you didn't cry again. for the next few months you're in our care, and you can bet that we'll treat you like our own daughter. maurice is already planning special meals for you each day, and renee is planning many day trips to take you on, though you won't remember them when you're over.

your papa came to us with big news, today. he, like your mother, was born and raised in france. this is where he began his business and where it flourished, but for the past few years, really since you were born, he's been travelling more and more to other countries for meetings, specifically to china. he's decided that it's in the best interest of his company and his family, you, if you move there... so we have four months left here. the rest of the staff is staying in france, but i've been specially asked by your father to go to china with the two of you. of course i accepted. this will be an amazing opportunity, ange. to grow up in china... i'm so happy for you!
the next few years of entries details the move, and belle's nanny's observations of the culture before...

today was my thirteenth birthday, and of course there was a big celebration. papa hired the best entertainers, the best caterers, and brought together all of my friends and i for a wonderful day. they all brought presents, of course, and i got some truly wonderful gifts and outfits, but i have to say that my favorite gift so far has been this journal. it was a total surprise that juliette had been keeping it, thirteen years worth of my life summed up in small little entries for me to read whenever i get bored or curious. i've read through a good portion of the years already, but i admit that it will tkae me more than a couple of hours of reading to get everything out of this novel that i know juliette's intended. she's told me that this is mine now, and it's my duty to carry on the story for however long i want to or, because she said it's my choice, merely keep it as a reminder of my childhood. i'm not sure what i'll do yet, but i guess that both options will always be there.

so, the idea of writing in the journal regularily would have gone along a lot better had i not almost immediately lost it. ah well, i tried
