[/style]as an only child, savannah had been a rather lonely kid. all the friends she made always had to have her parents approval first, and most often than not, the friends she made were either her cousins or other kids from rich families. she was home-schooled because her father hadn't wanted her to go near any boys- especially those who were dirt poor and go to public school. he didn't want his baby girl to mingle with those who aren't up to his expectations for her. growing up, she had lived a pretty sheltered life. she never had to lift a finger for things to go her way, but she never had her freedom. she was never allowed out of the house unless it was to attend a family function of the sorts or accompany her mother for "shopping trips." she never went to the movies or goofed around with her friends. she was a very serious little girl who only did what her father told her to do. savannah didn't know a life other than this. she would see other kids having the time of their lives, but she was resolved that she would never have that kind of life. she hated disappointing her parents so she stuck with never speaking to anyone. the only real friend she truly had was her bodyguard who probably knew more about her than her own parents. depending on how you looked at the situation, all the major things in savannah's life started happening at the young age of sixteen. all the bad thing started happening at this age, but because of this, it brought her to all the good things as well. the first symptoms had first shown just a week after her sixteenth birthday. the pain had been dull at her upper abdomen at first. she had pinned it as cramps at first, but as the days progressed, the pain got worst and worst. eating would make it worst and lying on her back was just torture for her. the pain often radiated to her lower back. so when it seemed like the pain would never go away, her father finally took her to the doctor's to get a prognosis. after several blood tests and scanning, they finally diagnosed her with acute pancreatitis - which confused both herself and her father seeing as neither of them drank. her father occasionally drank wine at dinner parties, but he wasn't, by any means, an alcoholic and his family had no history of pancreatitis. it was then that isobel williams came clean that savannah wasn't actually luke's biological daughter. isobel had fallen pregnant right before she admitted to luke that she was falling in love with him. it turned out savannah's biological father was a severe alcoholic and isobel had constantly drank while she was pregnant with savannah. she had expected her father to hate her because she wasn't his. however, instead, he seemed to be even more protective of her, directing all his anger at isobel. it wasn't long before they got a divorce and her father got custody of savannah. he got her the treatment she needed for her acute pancreatitis. and for a while, everything was okay. however, the pain returned every once in a while, and when it became apparent that it wasn't going away, savannah decided that if this sickness killed her, she didn't want to die living in this sheltered life. she convinced her father to allow her to attend public school, promising him that she would be good and do nothing but study. he was a little more lenient, and allowed her to go as long as she proved to him that she was all about the education. she had lived to her promise for a good deal of time before she met trace. he was nothing like any of the boys she had met in her entire life time. he wasn't like the rich snobby assholes her father introduced her to. he was.... different, to say the least. he showed her what life was really like. it was spectacular, but at the same time, totally horrifying. it was nothing like the world she was used to. he was everything her father disapproved of, so she never told her father about their friendship. it was clear that she was falling in love, though. even her father, who was always busy with work, knew that there were some changes in her. but he didn't do much about it until savannah came clean to her father that she was dating trace. he had immediately wanted to meet trace, of course. luke didn't have to see the boy for more than two minutes to know that he didn't approve of the fellow who was dating his daughter. it didn't matter to her though. trace had become such a prominent person in her life that she didn't care what her father thought. she wasn't surprised when her father tried to separate her from trace. it had been tough, fighting the battle with her father. he had done everything he could to try to break the two up. from petty threats to keeping her from leaving the house to arranging her marriage. savannah had constantly tried to use the "i'm sick" card on her father, and while most days he gave into it, he was determined to have his way when it came to her and trace. much to his despair, though, the two stayed strong. they were together all through high school, and she was very much so in love with the boy. her pancreatitis was mostly under control and when she was having an episode, she would hide from trace for a few days until the pain subsided, making up excuses that she had gone to visit her mother during those days. it seemed like life was perfect for savannah, and she believed that for a great deal of time. she was twenty and in her junior year of college, having the time of her life and majoring in tourism and minoring in english. she loved her life and it seemed like nothing could go wrong. but boy was she an idiot to think such a thing because her acute pancreatitis had worsened into the chronic stage. she never told trace about it because she figured that she was okay. that she was getting treatment for it and it seemed to be pretty stable. nothing to worry about. but her doctor had told her that there was no cure for chronic pancreatitis, just treatments to keep the pain at bay and controlling the attacks. what was worse was that only half of the people diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis lived longer than seven years, and a fifth of those diagnosed with this disease progress to pancreatic cancer. seven years seemed like a long time, but that was not enough for savannah. there were still so many things she wanted to do. she knew what she had to do then. she had to break up with trace. not only for herself, but for him too. she didn't want him seeing her die. she didn't want him seeing her sick and taking care of her. seven years was enough for him to move on and start his own family. make something out of himself and prove her father wrong. she started distancing herself from him and seeing more and more of her father's friends' sons. and eventually, she just broke up with trace. she lied and told him she didn't love him any more. she told him that she was falling for someone else. it pained her to say those things. it hurt more than her pancreatitis attacks. but she knew that it was the only way for him to give up on her. to help with that process, she made herself a bucket list and moved away shortly after. she traveled the world and tried different treatments while she was at it. no matter what, though, it was obvious that it was taking a toll on her. she lost weight, the attacks were frequent, and her mood just seemed to start going downhill. even as she was traveling, she was constantly hospitalized for some heavy opiates to make the pain disappear. the doctors kept telling her to just stay hospitalized so she could get better care, but savannah was determined to finish off her bucket list. if she was one of those unlucky few that didn't live past seven years or progressed to pancreatic cancer, then she didn't want to die knowing she never got to do everything she wanted to do in life. in the past three years, she never, once, set foot in crystal falls since she left. during the holidays and special occasions, she made her father fly to whatever place she had traveled to at the time. she was afraid that she would run into trace again. she didn't want to see him with another girl or even begin to imagine little trace's running around town. because if she saw him again, she'd just go in this pathetic state that neither her father nor her needed. as much as she hated to admit it, she was still very much in love with him, and she didn't thin she would ever love anyone else. but just a few days ago, savannah received a call from the hospital that her father had suffered a severe heart attack. despite her fears of running into her high school sweetheart, she didn't even hesitate to book the first flight to to see her father. she grabbed whatever she needed as quickly as possible and soon landed in myrtle beach. and, with no luck on her side, she ran into her childhood sweetheart at the hospital. it turned out that trace was the one who had, essentially, saved her father's life. and for that, she owed him eternally. she hadn't wanted to see him again, but then she owed him. so they went out for some drinks, and that was when he found out that she was sick. literally. she had been pretty much crying in pain in the middle of the sidewalk outside the small cafe. and despite all their bitching, or well, most of them came from her, he still accepted her. he was there for her. no matter how many times she protested against it, trace still wanted to spend whatever time he had left with her, and she couldn't be happier. now all that bothered her was whether her pancreatitis was progressing into pancreatic cancer or if there was any sort of chances of her getting better. |
